Can someone recommend a reliable Hosting Company

    Hello,
I have just started using Actinic software on trial.
I need to find a reliable and cheap hosting company to buy my webspace off. (small budget). The ones on Actinics site seem quite expensive.
Has anyone got any recommendations of the company they use that supports Actinic software, and if so how much does it cost?

If you are looking for active support from a host who knows Actinic, then you will need to look at the people who post here that offer web hosting.

You could contact Pinbrook and Techno-Web as a starting point.

If you need a host who supplies a web environment that supports everything you need to run Actinic, and has an excellent uptime record and low prices, I do not believe you can do better than 1and1.

BTW There are numerous other posts on this subject - did a search on 'web hosting' not return useful results?

You need to think about the whole picture. Will my site be hosted on a UK/US server. How many other websites will be sitting on the same server competing for resources and competing against yours. Does the package look cheap but all the bits you need cost extra, cgi-bin,stats.. Can they offer Actinic advise. Can they help load up your site. Just my humble opinion.

        Yes

Try Interhost....I've been using them for along while now and have found them very reliable and helpful and they cover just about everything you'll need plus you get an excellent service. Contact them on www.interhost.co.uk

I agree with Bill, 1 and 1 are pretty good. I've had a server with them for some time and it's worked well. Pretty fast machines, too.

I think you sometimes have to work hard to get support to help you, but they're no worse than some very expensive companies I've had dealings with (naming no names, F***hosts)

There are many hosting companies out there, however with and Actinic site you should try and find a hosting company who have had a lot of experience hosting actinic websites. This type of experience can be invaluable, especially if any problems arise.
Look on the http://www.actinic.co.uk website under hosting services for a list of recommended hosting companies, or you can feel free to contact teclan directly to discuss your individual requirements.

Techno-Web are the best in my opinion, very knowledgeable on Actinic and excellent support and easy set up…been using them for a couple of years, some problems last year but as is it, I don’t think any hosting company is immune to some downtime including all on here. Highly Recommended! Without a doubt you should choose Hosting from a company with Actinic experience ONLY, it not only makes sense it could cost you your business!

I agree that Techno-Web are very good. I have only been with them for a couple of months and so far its been excellent. Their customer support is excellent. When ever I have emailed them for help they have always replied within minutes with the answer and been very helpful, even when I emailed late at night I got a reply 5 minutes later.

                  Hi
                  I use www.westhost.com
I have a budget account (about $6 a month). They offer alot for your money and there's plenty of help in terms of user manuals, live online help, email and telephone support. Telephone is a USA number but the other forms of help I have found perfectly adequate and speedy.

I will say however this account is not suitable for running a phplist mailing list if you have one because you have a virtual server and it takes too much up of the processing power to run it.

                    Web Hosting

I have accounts with Claranet, 1and1 and TechnoWeb.

I would rate Technoweb 10/10. They are knowlegeable, contactable and helpful.

I would rate 1and1 at 4/10. They are unreachable - on many occasions I have waited for 10 minutes on a premium rate number only to be cut off at the end! They will upgrade systems without notice - even when there are known implications. The most infamous occasion being when they moved from IIS5 to IIS6. IIS5 used to allow mapping via parent paths. Most organisations had a secure database folder at the same level as the www folder - you reached this by parent paths. Suddenly my database stopped working - no-one could understand why - it took over three weeks to sort out!!!!! Finally if you have a .com hosted at 1and1 as it is a .com in Germany you won't be picked up in a google uk search.

As for Claranet........ 0/10 would be generous.

I used Techno Web last year but left due to service issues (which to be fair were not completly their fault but does leave a bit of bad taste) and also cost.

Subsequently moved to 1and1. True, service support is pony, but I have only contacted them twice in about 5 months so I can live with that. Very reasonably priced.

I highly recommend Titan. I've got quite a few sites hosted with them and they've got 100% uptime.

Technical support is instant and I've even emailed them at 11:30pm on a Saturday night not expecting a reply till Monday, 5 minutes later a reply in my inbox !

As you can see.......opions vary. Try a cheper option and then if you outgrow it, try a better (more expensive option).

                            We use flexihostings.net

Cheap as chips, and have had very little down time over the last few years.

You do seem to get a little extra in the way of Databases, and bandwith is quite high compared to UK companies
