Connecting with FREEOLA

Hi,
I am trying to configure my connection to upload a demonstration site using the connection wizard. When I get to the step 'Web site address' I get the following alert box message -
"Your web server requested that we use "http://registration.freeola.net/errors/e.php?ec=403" as your web server address. This appears to be an error page. Do you want to use the new address?".
I cannot continue without replying 'yes' and when I get to the 'Directories' step and select the relevant (correct) directories I get the following message in an alert box -
"Either your web root directory path or web site address appears to be incorrect.The connection wizard attempted to upload a file to the web root directory and download it via the web server but the file retrieved was not the same as the file sent."
Does any one know what's going on, and put me right.
My site address is www.kevgray.com.

Hi there

Please check the following thread: Previous Freeola Thread

In essense you need to know the following:

2) Run the 'Web | Configure Web Site Details' Wizard. In order to run this successfully you need to know:

a) The web address (URL) of your cgi-bin (or equivalent) folder
b) The FTP directory of your of your cgi-bin (or equivalent) folder
c) The web address (URL) of your web site
d) The FTP directory of your of your 'document root' folder (where your web pages are)

If you know these then you should be able to run the wizard successfully.

Thanks for the reply Nadeem, but still my main problem is that the wizard insists that it will change the web site address to the error page mentioned, and it still says that the file received was not the same as the file sent. Is this a test file that checks that the site address is correct ?
I'd appreciate any more help you can give.

What is happening is that the Connection Wizard is trying to find an address of your CG-BIN directory but every time it tries a wrong address, Freeola is forwarding it to a different web page rather than just saying 'this page does not exist'.

It may be that your server will not be detectable by the Connection Wizard, in which case you will have to enter the details manually into 'Advanced | Network Setup' about the folders on your web site. Nadeem's message tells you the information you need in order to do this.

I'm now using the advanced network setup and am getting further, but I'm now getting messages that actinic cannot run scripts on the server, although I have checked with Freeola that these are activated on my account.
I've attached screen dumps of where I'm getting to, and I am getting VERY frustrated that I can't talk to any one at technical support to help out a potential new customer !!
I'd appreciate any firther help you can give me.

Try changing the 'Catalog URL' to

http://www.kevgray.com/acatalog/

If you call our sales dept on 0845 129 4800 they can sort you out with a temporary one-day cover contract in order to get your store up and running on your server.

I am now trying to set up a demonstration on a laptop using Apache server etc. When doing 'Web/Refresh site' I get an error as follows - "An error occurred trying to create the sub-directory 'acatalog' on the website. This is usually due to permissions, but could be due to low disk space on the web server.
I have plenty of space, so I think it must be the permissions bit. What are these, where is it trying to create the sub-directory and what do I do to correct this situation please.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi there

We normally say for permission is that the:

/acatalog/ folder is set to Permission: 777
/cgi-bin/ folder is set to Permission: 755

How do these permissions get set and in which directories is it trying to create the folders please.

Hi there

The /cgi-bin/ folder should already be set by your webhosting company.
The /acatalog/ folder is created by the actinic software.

If you wish to change this permission, then you will need an external ftp software (IE Cuteftp or WS_FTP). If you have these software then you can change the permission, by selecting the folder and using the function CHMOD.

If you don't have an ftp software, then simply contact your webhost company and ask them if they can kindly change the permission for you

Thanks Nadeem, but as I mentioned I am setting up a local site with Apache server running on my laptop, using the instructions set out in the Advanced User Guide on pages 84 to 91, and not using an internet connection.
This makes no mention of permissions and how to set/change them.
Could you be a bit more specific please.

Sorry for not reading your posting proplery.

Ok please check out the section for "War-FTPd Setup" on Page 87. This tells you how to set up permissions.

I jhave attached two jpeg images for you, They are in a zip file, so you will need to unzip it first.

These are the settings it should be set to. Please make sure they are exactly the same.

I'm now getting alot further, to the 'merging incremental updates at the website' and I am getting a message that -
"Actinic received a network error while merging files on the server ...... A connection with the server could not be established"
Is there aproblem with my Apache setup, I'm running Apache 2 and as far as I can see it is set up properly and running. Is there anything obvious that I should be looking for ?

Hi Kev

The most obvious thing i would look for, in that error message is the path to perl, in "Advance | Network setup"

For my Apache localhost, i put down

"C:\Perl\bin\perl.exe"

All sorted now, a minor (major !!) typo caused the final error.
