Uploading new site to Inexpensive Domains

I am new user attempting to upload an Actinic site to Inexpensive Domains in the US http://www.datadurability.com/estore .

It worked fine when I uploaded it to the actinic trial site

http://shop.actinic.com/trials/trial2135/ . The problem seems to relate to the cgi scripts. I get the following error message A server error occurred while attempting to merge server files. 403 - Forbidden

My network settings are as follows - I want the wile to live in www.datadurability.com/estore and link to it from my main site when it is ready.

Its driving me nuts - can anyone help?

cgi script id needs to be 1 or higher (ie not zero)

try /web/cgi/ in place of cgi for path to cgi bin

try ../acatalog in place of path from cgi bin to acatalog

Thank you very much. I deleted everything and changes the 0 to 1 and attempted to upload again. They did upload but I cant get into the product catalog screen. The host ptovider says...

the files you have have hard-returns in them.. this is something like a ^M in some text editors... if you get rid of those using some sort of ASCII filter or something then re-upload you will be ok. I modified the ss* file and it runs now... but you have to do this for the rest of your files.

A sign of this is when you download the files off the server and open them up in other text editors you sometimes end up with lines being separated by extra lines....

Is this likely? It would seem strange that I would have to edit every file before I upload it. If it is necessary then is there some switch that I can throw in actinic to do it?

at least http://www.datadurability.com/estore has something in it now.

I'm slightly bemused by the fact that your acatalog folder is within estore folder, but your cgi bin isn't

what Type of webserver are you uploading to?

What is the function of the estore folder?

if acatalog is within estore then so should the cgi-bin.

did you set permissons on the cgi-bin to 755

Hi, Thanks for responding again. I didn't know that it was necessary to have the cgi script under the estore folder. I will change that and try again.

However, my hosting provider says that now that the cgi is uploading, that the problem is the "returns" build into the scripts.

I am attaching the rs000001.pl which was uploaded to the site and will attach a renamed version of it (rs0000011.pl) to another thread as I don't know how to add it to this one.

The only difference between them is that my host provider opened the second one on the unix host server and saved it again.

Can I cause actinic to do this?

Lets hope that putting the cgi folder under the estore will help in some way.

I have changed the cgi folder to be under the estore folder as per your recommendation but it has not helped.

The server just doesn't like the pearl scripts as uploaded - see above.

I personally don't think the problem lies within the scripts, after all there are hundreds of actinic sites out there which haven't had to do this.

If you like I can supply you with network settings to try an upload to our server, this will prove whether it is actinic at fault or your hosting environment

I've looked yat your site, none of the CGI scripts are working andwhere is the index.html file within acatalog?

Summary of situation so far

My index file is in www.datadurability.com/estore/ and everything else is below this folder.

I have attached a specification of the hosting server (server.txt)

The upload completes ok now except for;
A server error occurred while attempting to merge server files. 500 - Internal Server Error

The cgi files that ACTinic uploads to the server will not run unless the hosting provider opens them individually and does nothing except resave them. He says that it is something to do with a built in hard return.

I can't see the attached file server.txt.

The fact that you are getting an error when merging normally means that the Perl scripts do not have the permission required to control files within the acatalog folder.

It may be that the opening and re-saving the Perl files has the effect of resetting the permissions on the Perl files to something workable.

When you click the 'Test' button in 'Advanced | Network Setup', what message do you get?

What about the "returns" in the pearl files that I attached in the earlier replies? That is what my hosting provider saya is causing the problems. The files are different sizes before and after he saves them.

I don't think hard-returns in the Perl would cause problems, but then there may be something happening on your server that I have not come across before.

Actinic is not normally this much hassle to host on decent commercial web space. I suggest you take up Jo's offer to try hosting the site on her servers to prove where the problem lies. I think you will find that it lies with your hosting company.

The trick with using Actinic on cheap webspace is to ask first.
We're with catalyst2.com, £11 a year and actinic works on their space.

Ian, I have registered a domain with catalyst2 and am about to try to upload my site for testing. Could you email me a screenshot of your advanced/network setup/ screen so that I can copy your settings?
