    Webfusion Linux VPS Settings NE1??

    Hi peep`s

I`ve been trawling the forum here all day & spent all day yesterday on the phone to webfusion trying to figure the correct details for the new webfusion Linux VPS we have just rented with them. ( VPS being a virtual server if your a n00b like me ) Basically I was wondering if anybody has a webfusion Linux VPS setup so i could have a look at there settings or direct me to where they are in the forums here. (assuming that webfusion VPS`s are actually actinic compatable because im begining to doubt it ).

The main issue is to do with the cgi-bin and web root directory. I cannot change the permissions on the web root directory & (unsuprisingly) actinic wouldnt have any-of-it. So i tried to place both in a folder of this directory "httpdocs" but this didnt work either. Im stumped for ideas and probably look like a right idiot but any suggestions would be gratefull.
P.S I can upload any/all screenshots that may help tommorow (i ran out of time today sry)

    Thanks
    Billy Munroe

    Hi

there are number of threads/posts about Webfusion on the Actinic8 forum, however, it might be worth while posting your Netwrok settings here so people can have a look at what is wrong (don't forget to edit your password and username though)

no expert here as I had grief (not with Webfusion though but CGI)

I'm miffed why you have a folder called Httpdocs?
Did it not work with the default of your files being in Site1?

What is actually happening or not as the case may be?

          I get a 403 forbidden access on http://www.thebagshopuk.com/acatalog/

Actinic won't be able to check your settings if you're blocking access.

ok, there's a problem with the SSL certificate and I get the 403 error to which to me indicates that files are in the wrong folder so Actinic can't be found

sorry Mike i made a mistake
              CATALOGURL http://www.thebagshopuk.com/acatalog/
is wrong and should have been
              CATALOGURL https://www.thebagshopuk.com/httpdocs/acatalog/

The reason i have "buried" in acatalog in the httpsdocs folder on the server is because i cannot modify the files on the root of the server in any way except in some cases the permissions.
PS. i have tried with 755 & 777 permisions and still get nothing. i feel another hour phone call to pipex coming *sigh*.

The other annoying thing is that pipex are taking there sweet ass time to change our DNS settings to point at our server after we upgraded our hosting package. (Though something tells me it wont be the last)

Thanks for your help & time
              Billy Munroe

ps our IP is "212.241.192.81" if it helps while the dns settings are being played with

I think you might have answered your own question here as if they have not changed the DNS to point to your server you won't be able to see your website and possibly the reason why you're having trouble with uploading/editing as the server isn't set up yet to modify?

something along those lines won't be too far off I reckon as they are dragging their heels on this by the sounds of it

your probably right, I just have to be able to tell my director something. ill wait a day or 2 then try again and, assuming it works, post the settings for other users

                  thanks for the help guys&girls

                    one question Billy

You say "upgrade your host package" - did you have Webfusion from the start are have you actually moved to Webfusion from another host?

                      Hi Billy,

the httpdocs folder is the right place to put all the files and to navigate to with ftp. As far as the web server is concerned though, the httpdocs folder is invisible and web pages in there will appear in the domain root.

So include the httpdocs folder in your ftp path to cgi-bin but don't use it for any of the other settings.

You'll need to get your dns sorted before you can fix all this though.

                      Mike

We had a webfusion hosting account which was sold to us along with actinic (coincidentially how we found out about actinic) but the package we had didnt support SSL so we were forced to change from the "Fusion Business Windows" hosting account (www.webfusion.co.uk/webhosting) to a Linux Vps Value Package which did support SSL. (www.webfusion.co.uk/virtual-private-servers)

however domain names in pipex are usually looked after with a reg-123 account (www.reg-123.com) but if you buy your domain name with a webfusion hosting account like we did (to our regret) you dont get a control panel that allows you to control the dns settings with your purchased domain name. a little cheeky of pipex to sell you a E-Commerce package with hosting that wont allow you to use it fully. ( I guess thats what you get for falling for the "HOFF man" gimmik lol)

                        Many Thanks

                          arrggghh!

I had similar standard package and NO control panel either with them.

This 123, pipex and W/fusion all being advertised on te same bloomin website is annoying to say the least as when it comes to support it's "oh, that's down to so and so, we can't help you, goodbye"

I don't think for one minute it would take them 10 seconds to get the DNS pointing over to the correct server being that all you have done is "upped" your package

blood boiling springs to mind here

                            Webfusion DNS nameserver settings

We recently changed webfusion packages from Business Linux to reseller. Webfusion made it clear that it was up to us to change the DNS nameserver settings ourselves, so we had to go to 123-reg (with whom we had no prior dealings) and ask them to set up a control panel for us. This was done, but only after one person at 123-reg had put our domain name on someone else's account following a confusion at their end about user names and passwords

Yep DNS is managed through 123-reg. Hosting with webfusion and domain management with 123-reg control panel.
