SMTP Authentication is not supported by this server!

I'm having problems sending emails via Actinic. Uploading the site is absolutely fine but the emails do not seem to work neither from inside actinic or when a customer fills the "Contact US" form and clicks send, online.

I have tested the network settings and I get the following errors.

    Actinic Mail Test completed successfully
    server: passed
    connection: passed
    sockets: passed
    communications: failed
    authorisation: failed
message: SMTP Authentication is not supported by this server!

The user name, password and SMTP server are all correct as I have tested them both in Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird with success.

    These are my settings :

    HTTPPROXYMODE 0
    HTTPPROXYADDRESS
    HTTPPROXYPORT 80
    HTTPPROXYUSER
    HTTPPROXYPASSWORD

Is there anything I should look for ?
I have tried unticking the box for "Username and Password required" with no success.

    Website: www.grafea.com
    My provider is IXWEBHOSTING.COM
    Platform:Linux

Also, will I have to see a /usr/bin/perl directory inside my website or this directory doesn't have to do anything with email handling?

Any help will be much appreciated.

    Thanks

SMTP Authentication is not supported by this server!

The user name, password and SMTP server are all correct
the first statement tells you the second is uneccesary.

ie remove the tick box for authentication in network settings and reupload

usr/bin/perl is most unlikely to be inside your webspace. One installation is shared amongst all websites on your server.

      Have you tried using

      localhost

as the smtphost with requires Authentication NOT ticked - that works for most.

        I've mentioned on the post:

I have tried unticking the box for "Username and Password required" with no success.
I get the same error whether the box is ticked or not.

        Thanks

            Finally, it worked !!

This is what you need to do:

Click the "Web" tab, then Network Setup and that will open the Advanced Network Setup.

On the "Email Settings", remove the tick from the "UserName and Password Required" field and leave the fields "Username" and "Password" blank.

On the "SMTP server" box type "localhost" without the quotes.
Now click Apply. Your email address should be similar to your domain name under the "Setttings" ->"Business Setttings Tab". That is, if your domain name is niceflowers.com, then your email should read something like sales@niceflowers.com.

I know this is rediculously simplified but if you are dealing with customers having no previous experience whatsoever with Actinic or any other e-commerce program, directions should be as simple and as detailed as possible. In the end of the day, some of us just want to make millions from selling on the net. We might not be that interesting in resolving network issues !

            Thanks Bill...

Email Authentication Not a valid mail server

              Hi Everyone
I'm totally new to this, so please be patient. My mail server is Demon and uses sendmail. I have tried different variations as given to me by Demon but their firewall is blocking me. They say contact Actnic for a way around the problem. Does any one have any ideas please. I tried localhost but that doesn't work either.

Use a proven host and save yourself hours of heartache, you are most likely going to need to do this after 10 hours of trying things anyway.

This is all of course if you have searched the forum for your provider and had no success with any suggestions you found. Hosting is so cheap, it just isn't worth the hassle. Setting it up with actinic, should be a 5 minute job.

                  Try SMTP server: smtp.demon.co.uk
and uncheck Username and Password equired.

That's what works for a friend who's on Demon Web Hosting on Linux (the Zeus servers I think).

                      Hi angie,

A couple of questions. Are you hosting with demon or are they your ISP? Which hosting package are you on? and are you using the email address for your website or a different one?

                        smtp server problem

                        Hi Mike

I'm a bit out of my league here but here goes - we have a standard dial up account with demon for our email which is eltons.demon.co.uk. We also have tiscali broadband which I use for Internet access and where I will use to upload Actnic. We already have a web site running which is www.eltons69.com and this is where I want to add the Actnic catalogue. Our Internet hostname is eltons.
Hope that answers all of your queries.
Any help would be much appreciated.

I've tried looking for more info as most hosts will publish the information you need but I haven't had any luck. The only thing I can think off to check is that you are using an email address along the lines of me@eltons69.com

If that doesn't work then you should try talking to Demon support. Almost all hosts support smtp. It's usually just a case of finding out what the settings are.

I'm not sure if Actinic will work on Demon hosting. We've had several people move to us from Demon for this reason, got a feeling it was email issues that drove them away. Can't remember all the gory detail though
