    Help with Uploading Site

    Hi there

My hosts have recently changed server which has led to a whole bunch of problems with my website, including customers not being able to add to basket.

Most things are sorted out and working now, but I still can't upload the site and have lots of changes to make. The error message I'm getting is:

An error occurred when trying to connect to the server. This can happen when the server is unreachable or you have set up an SSL server, but this server can not accept SSL connections, or Windows is confused about proxy settings. If you have Internet Explorer or another application configured to work with a proxy, the settings should be the same for Actinic Ecommerce. Please check your connection first.

and I just don't understand why? My SMTP settings in Actinic (in Network Settings) match those in Outlook Express, yet when I try to e-mail customers through Actinic (which also doesn't work!) I get the following error message, which seems to suggest that the smtp settings aren't the same, but I have NO idea other than Network Settings where I would change them. Here is the error message for the mail customer:

Failed to communicate with the SMTP server.

    Possible Cause:
    Network transmission problems.

    Recommendation:
    Retry

    Resolution:
If retry fails, check your SMTP settings
    or contact your ISP.

    The error was:
(email address)_ATON failed - host not found (smtp.beautifulthings.asp-host.co.uk: Unknown error

    Command: send Filename:

Sorry for long post but I'm not techie at all, my hosts although being helpful don't feel this is their problem and I don't know what to do.

    Help MASSIVELY appreciated. TIA.

Remove the smtp info and just add local host without any passwords. There is lots of info on the forum about this if you search with various options you can try

      Hi there

Thanks for your help, I had done a search and tried localhost already - it still doesn't work .

Is there somewhere deeper in the programme where I could still have the old SMTP settings, which is what it looks like is happening from the e-mail error message?

smtp host is only set in the one place in actinic.

        your posted server response reads
        smtp.beautifulthings.asp-host.co.uk
        have you tried smtp.beautifulthings.co.uk?

And that's wrong - the SMTP settings should be smtp.btconnect.com. And this is what they're set at in Network Settings and in my Outlook Express? I just don't get it?

Actinic's SMTP settings are for the live website (cgi scripts) to use for sending email on the hosted server, and NOT for your local PC and your ISP (i.e. BT Connect).

You should contact your host and ask them what SMTP setting you should use to allow the cgi-script sendmail function to work correctly.
localhost, without username or password, works for the vast majority of hosting areas, but you should check with your hosting company.

Thanks for your help Fergus. I've spoken to my hosts who say that btconnect.com is correct? I've tried localhost but it doesn't work, will try them again.

                To clarify;

Your host = people who rent you the web space you (may be the same people who registered your domain name for you - may not).

Your ISP = the people who connect your PC/Network to the Internet.

BTConnect = an ISP with funny rules including something about only using their mail servers for mail from your desktop software.

A search on BT Connect should return threads showing other people's solutions.

Its not correct - as Bill says your host should provide the smtp details.

If they cannot then move to a host who can
