Thanks Sean, believe me I've done all the switching on and off you can imagine. The wierd thing, to my untrained eye, is the inconsistency of the errors generated. Today, the time outs just stopped so I thought maybe it was down to my isp/host and it had all cleared up, and then they started again! However, some progress has been made; I have managed to get my old v6 site back up and working again, and I have my v9 test site up too. (I've got another theory about having v6 and v9 installed at the same time on the same pc, but I need to investigate further. I don't think anyone else has had any bother with two versions together, so I'm probably wrong.)
A far as the greyed out purge and refresh option is concerned, I phoned tech support and apparently this option is only available once a successful upload has been carried out from this installation. This is why it was available on my laptop, but not on my desktop. I just exported a snapshot from the laptop and imported it into the desktop: and voila!! I've seen this question posted elsewhere, but without an answer, so I hope it helps someone sometime.
