Webfusion or Actinic - FTP problems.

    Hi

I've read everything on the forum regarding this error but nothing mentioned fixes it.

Just taken some webfusion webspace and followed their guide to setting up an actinic site but keep getting the same FTP error when trying to test the settings.

An error occured while checking the FTP transfer mode -- 500 Unknown command.
    Try using the other mode.

I have tried all the combinations of the FTP modes but it is always the same.

I have also set the permissions on the server to 777 for the pulblic_html folder and 775 for the CGi bin.

I am unsure if this is an Software problem (Actinic) or a host problem.

    Any Suggestions would be helpful.

    Thanks
    Ian

500 normally refers to not using passive settings i believe, although i must say that lately i've had a few clients saying that the settings they provide do not work, although that mainly revolves around the smtp settings.

      Hi Lee

I have tried every combination of passive and enhanced FTP settings and still no joy - same error.

My first point of attack would be the host and not actinic.

        post your settings...

and /or upload a cgi script outside of actinic to see if it works

I can ftp to the webspace using the same settings in smart ftp and I have managed to ftp to all the relevent folders - just get this error when actinic tries.

          Strange?

heres my setting (note that I operate without acatalog folder)

I still think its a host problem, have you asked them?

                Webfusion support - problematic.

well managed to get actinic talking to the webspace but keep getting the following error.

                "Error accessing the cgi-bin.
                Possible Cause:
The directory does not exist on the remote server
The permissions on the directory on the
                remote server are locked
The wrong Path to the CGI-BIN is specified in your web site details in the Business Settings"

The path to cgi-bin is set to /cgi-bin/ exactly as webfusion tell me.

I have also set the permissions on the cgi-bin to 775 (tried 777 to).

Webfusion cannot seem to fathom that there is a problem - three tickets and two phone calls and all I get is refered to the actinic setup page on their site.

Anyone else any ideas what I might try (i feel another host coming on)

                Cheers

There are hundreds of sites on webfusion, so it has to either be you or the package you have chosen. Have you tried the actinic wizard instead?

                    Hi Ian,
Don't profess to know how to solve your problem but I had a look at your settings.

I would double check the paths to and from cgi bin

I would look at possiblychanging to:

                    USEENHANCEFTP true
                    USEPASSIVEFTP true

                    And test

Maybe worth changing (though won't solve problem):
                    USERELATIVECGIURLS true

                    regards

Can you try changing the following:

                      PATHFROMCGITOCATALOG ../public_html/

                      and

                      FTPPATHFROMCGITOCATALOG (leave blank)

I have also set the permissions on the cgi-bin to 775
This should be 755 (I have seen it not work if it has been something different to this). Also the folder that your site files go into (I assume here it is 'public_html' instead of 'acatalog') should have permissions of 777.

OK guys thanks for all your input.

solved the problem after lots of hair removal, password problems and a wrong setting.

Site now up and running, taking orders - just now got to figure out how to get actinic/host to send confirmation e-mails.

Less hair is better - yes?

                        Cheers
