Hosted by Actinic - shafted by 1&1

    Hi all,

This is my first post so please be gentle!

I have my hosting with Actinic (Catalog v9) and bought my domain name from 1&1 (my first mistake, I hear you cry!). Surprisingly, pointing my Domain to Actinic went very smoothly. I should have known…

My issue is that I want to use the email that comes with my Actinic Hosting. I tried to change the MX record and got an error message at 1&1, saying I needed a ‘glue domain’. This appears to be a subdomain, which will also be pointed to Actinic.

The example at 1&1 shows a subdomain set up as ns.domain-of-your-choice.com but the MX address given to me by Actinic is mail.celtic-cross-stitch.com

Help! I’m now very confused, have ‘phone ear’ from talking to 1&1 (helpful but clueless) and Actinic (helpful but unable to deal with 1&1). I’m stuck in no man’s land and losing the will to live…

In the last convo, 1&1 say that I can’t have my email with them as I have pointed my domain away from them…sour grapes par excellence!

Any suggestions, comments, virtual tequila gratefully accepted….and Lee, please be nice, I’m already terrified of you and I’m a woman on the edge!
    Thanks in advance
    Mary

    Hi Mary

As no-one else has replied, (and I'm not an expert in this area) I'll throw in my tuppence worth which is that, in my opinion your current hosts (Actinic) should either transfer the domain name to you/them from 1&1 or at very least help you do this. This is perfectly possible from a technical standpoint, but more than that I think your hosts (whom you pay for a service) should assist on this. Pointing the domain whilst still held by 1&1 is OK as far as it goes, but a full transfer would be much better.

PS for the record I and others on this forum have found 1&1 to be very good, and there are plenty of good Actinic sites hosted with them

PPS I see from your link that you haven't gone live yet, and as such any changes you make won't affect your site from a SEO point of view. I'm not familiar with Actinic hosting (which might be great but I don't know), but one option you have is to go back to 1&1, upgrade your package (we and many other Actinic shops use Business) and host your site with them. There are many posts on this forum which will help you run your site with 1&1.

what are you trying to change the mx records to?

actinic can tell you what the mx server details, this is not unusual, i thinks its actually poor from a hosting point of view to maintain half the records when you change the ns records but thats a personal opinion, mind you there are other reasons you might need to maintain them.

but actinic should give you details to add a new mx record with a different priority normaly, these might not be your domain name, i dont know the setup on actinic, but it might be there mx records, what you are doing is telling it were to route emails to
