    FTP problems with Orange

We have just changed one of our clients to a different hosting company and are now having ftp problems. We can upload from our office with the new network details, but our client cannot get past the process 'checking indices' - the process times out with the message 'ftp error'. Our client is on Orange, using V8.5 on Vista. It also took a very long time to complete the network wizard on their machine and we had to restart the process several times before a successful setup was completed. Any ideas?
    Thanks!

Have you tried the usual suspects...

Connecting via FTP using another utility
Using / not using the enhanced FTP options in network settings
    Configuring the firewall

It is worth running netstat after launching an upload and see if you get a connection to your remote server listed.. once completed you should see it as TIME_WAIT before being released.

We were able to ftp with dreamweaver when we connected our laptop to the client's router, but when we ran actinic from the laptop we had the same problems (ftp timed out). I haven't tried unchecking the enhanced ftp facility yet, what does this do?

One other thing: we are uploading using an ip address as the client's domain is still currently pointing to the old host. We wanted to be sure all was working before changing dns, could this be an issue?

It switches off the enhanced ftp option as not all hosts offer the facility. The key is to pass a network test, you can almost do anything you want as long as actinic passes the test.

TIP: If you are unsure what something does, click on the question mark and then click on the area in question and you will often get an explanation of what it does/means.

Great chance of causing an issue IMO, why not try the site on a plain test domain that is up and fully working.

Sorry Lee, i've got to disagree. uploading using IP should present no problem as long as you get your paths to acatalog and cgi correct.

No need to be sorry that you disagree with me, we can only state our opinions from our own experiences. We both seem to agree that passing the network test is key and always will be the most important part.

I've never had any luck with using the ip tbh. If the domain has not propogated then network setup will fail every time.
