More than 3 columns to first page?

With thanks to Gary I'm getting closer.
Have seen the thread on how to show the front page with 3 columns of products, but is it possible to have more (I'm after 5)?
Will fiddle some with the bits downloaded from that thread, but just in case anyone's done this already.

On looking at the notes on doing columns, see that it is for several, not just 3 (so to use the "middle" several times). Sorry.
