Hello,


I have downloaded the free version of actinic to see if it is user friendly for a novice.. I am managing to use the software ok and having created a shop in a very basic fashion decided to try and publish to the web. I get through it until I come to a point where it asks me for the path to the web root directory. whatever i put in there it come up with "the cgi script can not navigate from the cgi-bin directory to the web root directory. Check the path?

Now as a total noivice this means nothing to me?

Apparently I need to tell you use windows?

Can anyone help??

Try changing
PATHTOCGIBIN cgi-bin/
to PATHTOCGIBIN /cgi-bin/
then click on the network test and post any errors that are returned.

Hi and thanks for your advise i have run the test and get these errors in order


Unable to move to the cgi-bin directory "/cgi-bin/" on the FTP server.
The specified directory does not exist or you do not have access to the directory.


The 'SMTP server' address entered in the 'Web | Network Setup' is incorrect, or not a valid SMTP server.
Possible Solutions:
1) Try "localhost" as the "SMTP Server"
2) Check the "SMTP Server" host name, user name and password with your server host, then correct the details in 'Web | Network Setup'
3) Check your firewall settings



The directory specified as the path from the CGI-BIN to the online store folder does not exist on the web server. Check the path. Also see the on-line help for "Path from FTP server to Catalog".


The script does not have permission to write to the web site directory.

You need to check that the cgi-bin directory exists and also check it's permissions which should be 755. You can do this using an FTP client.

My Ftp options button is in grey hence its out of action,

Is this a sign I have not got a cgi bin directory?

How do I make one?

An FTP client is not part of Actinic - this is an independant bit of software such as CuteFTP or FileZilla orsimilar.

OK once you have FTP to your account, you will see the structure of your webspace. Once you have confirmed there is a cgi-bin and the permissions, you need to know were it is sitting.

under some setups the cgi-bin does not reside in the same directory as your web root.

could you please list the folders/directories as they appear when you login using an ftp client. It might look something like

docs
cgi-bin
tmp
etc

there are various ways it can be setup, host vary but its a case of working it out.

It looks like your domain has some kind of visitor blocking going on (giving 403 permission denied errors) which makes it impossible for Actinic to run the network settings tests.

You need to turn this off on your website.

I would also suggest you ask to be moved to a UNIX server rather than windows. Actinic is much easier to set up and run on a unix server.
