    Complete Newbie, having trouble!!

    Hello everyone,

I'm new to the program, I say new, it's taken me 6 months to put the thing together and finally it's done - big fanfare as I upload it and...

um, nothing. I need a folder called cgi-bin, and to be honest I've got no idea what it's talking about - having managed to get to see the folders that are on there, there's no folder called anything like that.

Is there a step-by step guide for people who are complete idiots? The wizard would be great if it explained what to do if you didn't have these folders set up! Trouble is, I'm with 1&1, and from what I gather I need something called Perl, and I don't think they do it, or if they do they're hiding it.

I'm sorry if this is covered elsewhere, but I'm pretty fed up after putting so much effort in, to be stopped at the last hurdle!

Can anyone give me some pointers?

sounds like you have the basic package when you need a higher level package for actinic to run correctly.

      Thaks for the quick reply!

I have the business Pro package - about the 3rd or 4th up! It's on a Windows server - could this be the problem? They mention Perl but only on the linux server?

actinic is very hard to get working correctly on a windows server the vast majority run on Linux so your best bet would be to change servers. Also you may want to setup a default site first and check all is working ok before uploading your new site as you may have messed something else up during the design process and you will be off on a wild goose chase trying to fix it

Actinic will run on windows servers, although i am not familiar with one and one, this thread might help http://community.actinic.com/showthread.php?t=29763

Bit of an update - in case any other newbies are having trouble - 1&1 have advised me I'm going to need to contact their billing section (?) to sort out the transfer, so hopefully that will sort it out. They also wanted to know what the program requires, so I sent them this link

              http://actinic.co.uk/requirements/index.htm.

Okay, back again - I can swap to linux, only it's going to mean cancelling my current (week old) package, re-applying for new contract, transferring the domain over (again) and making sure everything's running right then cancelling the old one. Oh, and because they're not running the package I signed up to at the moment, it's going to cost me nearly 5 times the original amount.

Any advice? Any recommended hosts that aren't going to take the michael like this?

I thought someone had changed with them before and had no problems? Seems a little extreme to me

Cheers guys - and um, I'm a she

I thought it was easy - surely not a massive hassle, considering there's nothing actually on the servers or anything.

It's just not worth me getting an ucler over, so I'm going to tell them to shove up it their bottoms and go elsewhere. They tried to charge me £8 to change 'registrar details' - not bad considering they show up on whois as the registrars, as I bought it via them! Am I going to have to do this again when I switch hosts?

Oh, and according to their tech support they only o 10mb process memory, whatever that is, not the 20 that Actinic recommend.

Sorry about that (quickly edits post)

OK you only need to change ns records and this should be free, find your new host and they will tell you what to change them too.

I think everyone has suffered hosting issues in some way, your not alone

Thanks god for that - thought I was just being overly supid. Knew I should have bought myself a techy-person to do this for me. And now the 'f' key on my keyboard is playing silly buggers. I think I'm going to take the hint, close my lappy and sit in a dark room until the murderous thoughts go away.

Have sent an email to the guy who sorted out my problem 1st time round, asking them what they're going to do for me, otherwise they can cancel my hosting. See what they say.
