    cgi-bin path problem

    Hi,

I am setting up my ftp connection in Actinic for the first time.

I have connected to the server ok, and the window that asks for the cgi-bin and the root path comes up fine, with the folder options. So it is clearly ftping ok to server as it can see the files.

The next window is where it falls down.... as it asks for the cgi-bin address. It has put in http://www.siteboxesdirect.co.uk/cgi-bin/
So I click next to this, as this it the correct path. I know that it is correct as I have my dreamweaver open at the same time and have connected via ftp to the server and can see the cgi-bin folder.

I have checked that the folder has the right permissions of 755.

But when I click next it says the following:

The specified CGI-BIN URL or possibly the path to the CGI-BIN is not correct. Check the CGI-BIN URL and try again. If the CGI-BIN is correct, return to the first page of the wizard and turn on the button to confirm each setting. Then progress through the dialogs once again and verify that the path to the cgi-bin is also correct. The web server returned (404) not found.

Now firstly, if I go to http://www.siteboxesdirect.co.uk/cgi-bin/ in my browser i get 403 forbidden error and not a 404.

Secondly, I haven't gone through the wizard and added my proxy server details, as i dont know them, and would have to ask a office techy for them, plus, I shouldn't need them, as I can connect to the cgi-bin via my ftp in dreamweaver, so my firewall isn't blocking it.

    Any suggestions would be great.

    Cheers

Search the forum for the correct settings for your host and use those as a starting point. If they are not there, show us what you have so far and who your host is.

      Hi,

I have searched the posts for my host and have only found one post which isn't really saying much about them other than they use them.

I am using Pipeten. Should I ask their support staff for help? Do you think it is a server problem rather than an actinic?

I've never heard of them myself, you may even find that they will not work with Actinic (some do not, you can't just choose anyone when hosting an actinic site). At this stage, I would probably take some example settings of another host, set those up your end and then adjust from there as they will get you in the right ballpark. The stickies in this forum also give you a host requirement document you can give them to check.

Neither theirs or actinic. how can anyone answer that question without information.

as Lee said paste your network settings here and someone can take a look, remember to remove the password

Also what OS are you running

            Hi,

Pipeten are compatiable with Actinic as I checked with them by asking their tech staff before taking out the hosting with them.
This is the package i have.
            http://www.pipeten.com/linux_enterprise_hosting.html

            It is an Apache server.
Not sure what details you want to know.
            The hostname is web1.pipeten.co.uk.
I then enter my username and password.
The server isn't a dedicated server.

The server is setup as follows:

            logs
            stats
            siteboxesdirect.co.uk
            • cgi-bin
            • images
            • cp
            • acatalog

In the wizard, it can see that the path to the cgi-bin is www.siteboxesdirect.co.uk/cgi-bin, but it just seems to find a 404 error.

Is this enough info or do you need more?

            Cheers

When you thoroughly searched the forum, you will have seen a number of times a list of the network settings people have in their actinic. I think there is also a stucky advising what to do in the event of a problem. People provide these settings and we then take a look and see if we can offer any advice. That is what we are after.

http://www.siteboxesdirect.co.uk/cgi-bin/ would be far more likely i expect, like I said use some existing settings to get you started.

i mean export your actinic network settings and paste them here, open with notepad or something

sounds to me as though your ftp login is looking at you complete hosting space though, create a new login that only has access to the the public_html (or what ever it has been called) area of your hosting plan

Hi, sorry lee, my bad typing.....
the path that actinic picked up in the wizard was as follows:
                        http://www.siteboxesdirect.co.uk/cgi-bin/

Darren, where and how do i export my network settings in actinic? And surely it won't have anything in there as I haven't completed the connection wizard as it falls down at the cgi-bin path?

Problem solved!! I contacted pipeten support and they said that i needed to specify the cgi-bin directory in my pipeten control panel and add the extensions. So they added one for me:
                          http://siteboxesdirect.co.uk/cgi-bin/i.pl

                          And now it works!

So anyone who uses pipeten, remember to do this in your control panel.

                          Many thanks for you help.
