Am I right in thinking that if I have subsite under my main site, the permission for that site folder will have to be set to 777 (to allow writing to the acatalog folder under it?)

I stand corrected but, no I don't think that is correct. I believe folders (in linux) don't inherit permissions and will only change child folders if the parent is recursively changed. -
