FTP Error : 500 Invalid command: try being more creative

I'm setting up a new site in 10.0.4 and entering the FTP details.

When I test it, I get an FTP error :

500 Invalid command: try being more creative

I know this FTP user works because I can connect using an FTP client from the same machine.

I also know that Actinic is connecting because if I change the password so it's incorrect, I get the message :

Unable to connect to the FTP server because the specified username or password is incorrect.

I've searched this site and i couldn't find anything.

I've searched t'interweb and there's lots of people getting this error but no resolutions that I could apply to Actinic.

I've tried every combination of FTP settings on the Network Setup screen including the FTP Options screen.

Anyone come across this before?

Are you sure the permissions and ownerships are correct?

Even worse that that Duncan..... I'd set up an FTP user and failed to notice it was set up to login to the /public_html/ directory!!

That'll teach me to work at weekends!
