    1 & 1 Server Reconfig

I do not understand any of this. Please can server-savvy folk help? I am hoping to move away from 1and1 soon, but not before they mess around again:

We would like to inform you of an upcoming migration of the 1&1 Web servers: In the course of our system maintenance, your 1&1 hosting package will be migrated to an updated operating environment in the period from 10 October to 14 October 2011 in order to continue to provide you with the best and most secure environment for your hosting package.

This does not require any preparation or adjustments on your part, the migration is fully automated. However, you hosting package will not be available between 8:00 AM and 06:00 PM for about 5-10 minutes. Subsequently, all applications will be available as usual. For technical reasons, we cannot specify the exact migration date.

    What will improve?
Apart from better performance and more security, the migration to a Linux operating environment (based on Debian Squeeze/6.0) specifically adapted to the needs of 1&1 and its customers also includes the upgrade of the following components:

    Apache 2.2 http://apache.org/
Please note that the migration has resulted in a number of changes in the runtime configuration. For example, the instruction 'IndexOptions FancyIndex' now takes you to the function that used to be available under the obsolete 'FancyIndex On'.

    http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/upgrading.html
If you are using very old scripts or software, please note that after a redirect by Apache, certain internal variables, such as 'REMOTE_USER', will henceforth only be available as 'REDIRECT_REMOTE_USER'.

    Python 2.6 http://www.python.org http://docs.python.org/release/2.6.7/whatsnew/2.6.html

    Perl 5.10.1 http://perldoc.perl.org/ http://perldoc.perl.org/5.10.1/index.html

These upgrades do not require any action on your part. After the migration, these components will automatically be available to you. Please feel free to contact our support team if anything does not work as usual after the migration or if you have further questions.

    Hello,

In my first hand experience, a server migration / upgrade can result in the Actinic network settings needing to be changed.

Until they have done the migration, you won't know what effect this will have on your site, you may not notice any change, but be prepared to correct the Actinic network settings after they have done the work (Web | Network setup | Wizard).

This is just honest advise, their changes may not have any effect to your site, but it is best to be prepared for these things.
