    Timedout on port 21

I have carried out the Actinic Settings test on my ftp settings and it shows that the settings are fine, when I try to upload I get this error:

    An FTP error occurred: -
Request: ->Opening connection to ftp.surfslaves.com on port 21
    Error: The operation timed out

    My settings are:

I have tried settings from other posts but don't seem to be able to nail. Very frustrating as it was working at one stage, I didn't export the working settings and now I'm lost.

Can't be far out otherwise Actinc wouldn't give the all clear in the ftp test.

Could somebody steer me in the right direction?

    1. Is this on Vista ? In which case this thread might help: http://community.actinic.com/showthread.php?t=37591

    2. Who is your host? (Please don't say easyspace)

    3. Double check your password just in case.

Possible something external to Actinic is blocking the connection. Firewall, Anti-Virus, etc.

Open a Firefox browser window and try the URL ftp:ftp.surfslaves.com
If you're not able to log in there, the problem is outside Actinic.

I'm using the XP operating system and the host company is TSO hosting. Had a bad few days with Easy Space about 4 years ago and will never go back there.
Just checked the password and still get the same problem.

I have checked the address: ftp:ftp.surfslaves.com and the browser hangs until this message appears:

        The connection was reset
The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.
        * The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
        moments.

        * If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
        connection.

        * If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

I have switched off the Windows firewall but still have the same error.

I am also running EST NOD32 Anti Virus and have disabled this but still get the error.

One of the suggestions in the thread I linked to if there's a problem in IE is:

Under the Advanced tab in IE Tools\Options
Uncheck the “Use Passive FTP (for firewall and DSL modem…) checkbox
Check the “Enable FTP folder view (outside of Internet Explorer” checkbox

I have checked the address: ftp:ftp.surfslaves.com and the browser hangs until this message appears...
That address works fine (in Firefox) for me here. I get an User-name / password prompt and if I enter rubbish I get to a 530 Login authentication failed screen which is what I'd expect with a bad user-name / password.

Try this from a different PC (if you have one) and see if it's OK there.

Ok I have followed the link above and worked setting port 21 as an exception in the firewall.

I then sucsessfully worked through the cmd prompts and IE options. I checked for an actinic upload with my fingers crossed but got the same error.

I then opened the site folder and Actinic database and did a compact and repair, what a mistake. I now have this error which I reported on a previous post. I fixed it by reinstalling Actinic.

An error occurred while checking the FTP transfer mode - 200 TYPE is now ASCII
              500 I won't open a connection to 127.0.0.1 (only to 80.4.22.246)
              500 Unknown command
Please try ticking the 'Use Passive FTP Transfers' box in the 'Network Setup' screen if it is un-ticked or un-tick it if it is ticked.

Maybe I can talk the wife into letting me buy a new computer

At last, I have finally sorted out my ftp problems. Norman was right, I reformatted an old laptop and installed Actinic V10. The site uploaded fine from my home IP, I then went to the office and bypassed the Netgear router, the site uploaded fine. I have now configured a new router and can finally get on with the work I need to be doing to relaunch my site.
Thank you for the input to this thread.
I'm really happy that this is sorted out
