    CGI-BIN problems

    Hi there,

I use 1and1 and have a live site with them, working absolutely fine.

I'm trying to set up a new site using the wizard.

At the CGI-BIN URL step it asks for the URL and then gives me the error shown in the attached file.

The URL is correct as far as I'm aware, yet the only option is to go back and do it again, which I have done several times.

    Any advice available?

If you have a site working then ignore the wizard and use those as your starting point.

If that doesn't work, post the settings and the network test results.

      Next step

      Hi Mike,

Thanks for your response. I have continued as advised, by entering all the data for the network setup manually.

When I try to publish to web, I receive a message telling me there were permissions errors. In response, I made all the folders 777 so there shouldn't be any issues, but I get the same errors.

The network test is now greyed out and the website purge and refresh is also greyed out.

You may visit what has been posted, here. It is the default site. You will notice that you get errors as soon as you try and do things.

You'll have to post your network settings as it looks to me as if there's a mistake in them:

        1. Actual site pages are here:

        2. cgi-bin is trying to forward to here:

(note missing path marked in red in 1).

          Resolved

          Hi Mike,

First of all, thanks for your support.

Convinced it wasn't anything I was doing wrong, I contacted Actinic who identified that it was a 1and1 issue - Perl scripts were not 'switched on'.

It turns out that my other website is on a '1and1 - Dual Standard' account and this one is on a 'Dual Basic' account. I upgraded from basic to standard and scripts were switched on, and problem solved.

          Learnings:
          • In my experience, 1and1 are excellent. But you need to check you have the Perl scripts switched on.
          • At no time did the error message say 'Perl Scripts are not running', it gave messages about permissions, which sent me in the wrong direction.
          Kind regards,
          Phil Benjamin

Glad to see this one's sorted.

I've no idea what 'switching on' the perl scripts does because they were running when I looked at your site. The only problem I saw was that they were forwarding to the wrong location.

So no surprise you didn't get any 'perl' warnings as the scripts were there and running.

I guess this will have to go down as one of these 'odd things happen sometimes' problems.

And yes, I tend to agree about 1and1. One or two hiccups but generally very good and reliable and offer good support when needed.
