Unable to contact the specified FTP proxy server

After mucho problems with SMTP and 1&1servers highlighted on the v11 boards (and now resolved ), I find myself still trying to get Actinic to complete a successful network test.

I end up with the notice

Unable to contact the specified FTP proxy server. Check the proxy server and FTP port. Contact your system administrator or ISP for information on your proxy server.

A connection with the server could not be established
I have not changed any settings (other than setting SMTP to now use the correct server), and have performed a refresh.

In network settings, under the 'proxy settings', 'Default (Windows settings)' is selected for FTP proxy settings.

Everything seems to operating fine. I can upload the site, refresh it, and download orders.

With this in mind, what does 'FTP proxy server' actually refer to?
What does it do, that if the test connection is failing, I should be concerned about?
Any suggestion as to how to get the test to pass?

Not sure why you need the proxy settings but has you have them set to use windows settings then making changes outside of Actinic will actually affect the Actinic operation. I run all my sites with proxy set to none, and if you have a direct link from your PC to the internet router then you should not need to use a proxy.

A proxy server is used when you have a firewall in place that is set to prevent most computers on the local network from directly accessing services such as FTP on the Internet. One or more devices (usually another computer) are setup with permission to access external services including FTP servers so they can send and receive messages through the firewall, these are known as proxy servers and provide a means for the local computers to access the Internet. Proxy servers typically handle access to web sites, FTP servers and Email and protect the local machines from external hackers.

If you can upload to your Actinic site then it is unlikely that you need the proxy settings, so you could try setting them to none and see if that cures the error and still lets you upload. If that setting doesnt work then the problem may well be with the proxy server itself.

Thanks as ever for taking the time to explain so clearly.
I have no idea why I have 'FTP proxy use default windows' ticked - I don't remember changing it myself. Is this not teh default install setting? Anyway, have changed to 'none' as suggested, which means the network test passes without fault.
I can still upload and download as before, so problem solved

Glad it helped, I believe none is the default setting.
