    Network Setup problem

Just starting out with Actinic and trying to configure network settings - hosted with 1and1.
I get as far as "Trying CGI guesses" then it asks for the CGI-BIN URL which I enter but get an error message saying "The wizard received an error while verifying the cgi server. Error sending request. Check the CGI-BIN URL"
Now with 1and1 there is no cgi-bin folder by default, so I have had to create one manually via an ftp client - is there something else I needed to do other than simply create a new folder and call it cgi-bin?

One and One comes in Widdows and Linux server versions. You'll need to tell us which flavour your using before we can help.

If you search the Forum for "one and one network settings" you should find lots of examples.

Will do. It's the Windows version incidentally.

Is the CGI-BIN folder executable? Just something to check. Most ISP's create one for you and make it executable.

I don't know if it's executable or not, I wouldn't even know how to tell. There was no cgi-bin folder in my webspace by default, I had to create one manually via ftp.

If you are using Windows, you will not be able to change the permissions on files/folders via FTP - 1and1 will have to do it for you.

Sometimes on Windows servers, the folder for scripts will be called 'scripts' rather than 'cgi-bin'. Is this one there?

No, there's no "scripts" folder either. What do I need to ask 1and1 to change?

                    Hi,

I have looked at your config details and it seems i have exactly the same problems..

I am trying to find out wether its a problem with my hosting company (fasthosts). Who are you hosted with if you dont mind me asking?

                    thanks for your time

                        Thanks for the reply....

I was hoping you would say fasthosts..lol

It seems that hosting companies need to work closer with actinic and other software developers to make this an easier process.

Having conquered the software issues its frustrating to come up against these types of hosting config problems.

I am currently trying a server change from windows to linux with fasthosts to see if it will work .

                        kind regards...

Server configuration problems like these are very tricky to pin down on the forum. I suggest you register an email support question at http://www.actinic.co.uk/support/register.htm and the email support team will request your FTP details and take a look at the server for themselves.

Setting up actinic at fasthosts does seem to be a real problem. FH will just blame actinic.. I won't use FH for actinic anymore, the stress just isn't worth it. The old servers were fine but there just seem to be so many set up/timeout problems now. IMHO. Now that they are forcing upgrades from the "happy windows 2000" servers to their "windows 2003", a few sites might be on their way out. The whitepapers at xtreme are supposed to tell you the settings but still things tend to be a nightmare, however I am biased. They now recommend the Linux servers but then you get into having to get to grips with putty, or plead with TS to set the permissions. A right todo.

Problem solved by changing to 1and1's Linux-based servers.
I am, however, left with a minor niggle in that when testing network settings I get a message saying as follows:-

The computer you specified as your mail server is not a valid mail (SMTP) server. Check the computer name or address and try again. If it fails again, then it is possible, you were locked out by a firewall program, or you don't have network connection to this server.

                              ...and then this:-

                              Mail server messages:

                              Connect Failed (Connection refused)

My network settings are as follows:-

                              HTTPPROXYMODE 0
                              HTTPPROXYADDRESS
