    Server relocation

We're looking at moving our store to a dedicated server. Given the 24-48 hour period to repropogate DNS what's the recommended/a good method of maximising continuity?

    Cheers

forgot to mention.... we're using name-based virtual server stuff in Apache on our new box as we're running a few different sites.

      Good question.

The biggest thing you have to worry about is losing orders en route.

My suggestion is to suspend ordering on the existing store, then download orders half an hour later. Once you know you are not going to be losing orders, you should swap your name server details. Once you have done this, change your Actinic network settings to make your store run under the IP address of your new server.

Check your store is working fine on the new server, and then test whether your store works OK with the 'Use Relative CGI-BIN URLs in Catalog Pages' box ticked as this will allow people to connect via both an IP and a domain and the store will not differentiate.

You can then leave a page on the old server that forwards people to the IP address of the new store.
