    Web Hosting

    Hi Everybody

I've just about finished building my website using Actinic Developer/Dreamweaver and now found myself very confused about what exactly I need to launch it!

I have phoned a few companies now, but am a little bit baffled by the terminology that they use, and the prices I am being quoted differ quite drastically - probably because I know naff all!

My site folder has 2081 files in and is 66.8mb in size. There are approx 1800 images (jpg/gif) and probably 100 different product sections.

I expect the amount of products on the site to almost double in the next 12 month and the site will probably change quite alot an include flash etc.

What sort of prices should I be looking at for a site of this size? What size band width do I need? What hidden costs should I look out for? And who do you recommend?

    Any help would be appreciated.

Given that you are expecting your site to double in size and then some, you will probably need around 250MB storage space. Bandwidth depends on how many people visit your site, the average size of each page, which pages are visited most often, etc. Ideally, find someone who will let you expand your bandwidth usage as your business grows, but you should probably be looking at about 500MB per month to start off with.

You need a cgi-bin folder, and the ability to run perl scripts. You may need a secure server depending on how you want to process payments. A shared server should be fine to start with, and you should probably expect to pay between £10 and £25 per month.

P.S. I can arrange hosting for you if you like (I am a hosting reseller - ie. I buy webspace in bulk and re-sell it in bits) - e-mail me for details: info@netshine.nospamthankyou.co.uk (remove the nospamthankyou bit)

Errrr, i'd _never_ spend that much on a shared server...

I have reseller accounts at http://www.sonnethosting.co.uk but any of their shared plans at http://www.sonnethosting.co.uk/shared/index.php would be suitable. They are really helpful and are about at all hours of the day! If you sign up, tell Marie I referred you (Matt from PlatinumWebs )

Neither would I, but that is, in my experience, the average.

Oh, and I was including the cost of SSL there, which may not be necessary.

Sonnet looks like a good one.

            Hosting - Who to Choose

If you click the "Members List " then click "Posts" this will bring up the top posters in the forum. Apart from the Actinic guys and Norman most of us can provide hosting that is suitable for Actinic and as we all have a wealth of experience you will have no problems getting the site up and running.

Our, suitable for Actinic space is £120 per year with a 10Gb a month bandwidth limit. You can have upto 1Gb of space.

Thanks for the quick response guys.

So on top of the yearly fee for space and bandwidth, am I right by understanding that I will also have to pay a seperate yearly fee to get a secure sight set up as reagards to some sort of certificate??

I would recommend getting your hosting from a reseller that designs and hosts Actinic sites themselves - I think that they will be able offer you a better support service. Gary's tip to look at the list of top posters is a good idea. Some hosts offer a free trial, which again is good.

The other thing to look at is the speed of the website, you will find a huge difference in speed.

Also look at the cost of extra bandwidth - if you go over your bandwidth you will have to pay per MB, which can work out to be quite expensive.

(BTW Actinic chaps, this forum seems to be running very slowly since the upgrade the other day).

Avoid very cheap hosting suppliers (IMHO).

I phoned up 'Sonnet' and although they have a fairly good web sight and are very helpful they know very little about Actinic. However there prices seem ok to me? Is it a good idea using someone who knows very little about Actinic?

Or should I trust a smaller company/person like Gary Hay - Grampian Web Wizards Limited? But, is someone who obviously knows alot about Actinic and could help with any problems I may encounter? (I'm very sorry Gary if any of that sounded dis-respectful or incorrect)

Definately go with a host that understands and can support you with your Actinic site. If you do a search of the forum for hosting or something like that, then it should bring up a mass of people saying that they have tried this, that and the other host, and who should they use as there current host knows nothing about Actinic and blames any problems on the software, so yes, try and use someone who knows what they are talking about when it comes to Actinic..

Thanks Jan, It looks like you've answered some of my questions before I had chance to ask them )

Which "reseller that...hosts Actinic sites " would you recommend?

What would make a difference to the speed of my website? what question do I need to ask or that?

What would you call a very cheep hosting supplier? What sort of prices would they charge?

I can't really recommend a host for you - I have accounts with pinbrook, hazelnet and harlequin. Both of my live websites are hosting with harlequin because I find them to be quite quick but they are expensive. I am also very pleased with my accounts with hazelnet and pinbrook, both were very easy to set up and again seem to me to be quick. I had an account with fasthosts which was not good - for Actinic use anyway.

I have just looked through the top 20 posters and these companies provide hosting :

                        Pinbrook
                        Gary Hay
                        Support@Techno- (4surehosting)
                        Harlequin
                        Jenny

I don't know whether Chris Brown does or not, but am fairly sure that the other's don't.

If you call Actinic, they will be able to recommend hosting partners as well.

Cheap hosting - I know of people that host their business on packages costing £15 a year. I would say that anything less that £50 might not be up to the job - I'm not an expert here though, just a user (with a couple of nightmare hosting experiences under my belt).
