well - even though i live in the us, we've lived and traveled in europe extensively, including the uk.

the one place name that always got me laughing is "bury st. edmonds."

we had a colleague who lived in "prior's marsden near rugby". after driving out to visit, my wife and i decided to rename it "prior's marsden near nothing."

    anyway.....

on the other hand, we have some interesting place names here in texas - gun barrel city, dime box, veal station, telephone - to name but a few.

I don't think they will come calling from their Tourist Information Board

which nicely leads into ridiculous names - when I was in South Africa earlier this year, I came across people called "Gift", "Pretty", "Robot" and "Traffficlight"

Here in Tasmania we have a place called Promised Land. Then there is Paradise and the really freaky one is Nowhere Else.

I was brought up in New Zealand where my sister worked in a local government office.
She assures me there is a Sidney Harbour Bridge walking around out there.

There's a place simply called "Oh Dear" on Pitcairn Island. Also a place called "Break im Hip".

It's a very interesting place, Pitcairn Island. I'd love to go one day.

In Hull there is a street that often wins the stragest street name award (apparently the is one!) and the street is called

                      Have a look at this:

(If you can get in - unfortunately the ordnance survey site is extremely slow)

This thread has reminded me of another place that tickled me.

For those of you who remember, Puff the Magic Dragon in the land of Honily. Well Honily is a place in Warwickshire around the Meriden and Borstall Green area.
When I first saw it I had to look twice and laughed all the was to Kenilworth where I was going.

We live in Lands End - but not the one you're thinking of, a little hamlet with a notorius ford in Berkshire.
Our official directions to our house (I have them hidden on my site) actually say something like ''go past the no through road sign, there are no houses in this bit, keep going until you start thinking 'there's nothing down here, I must have gone wrong' then you are nearly there and must keep going a little bit further to find us..''

I always used to snigger as a teenager at Pishill just north of Henley.

As to names, I'm sure it was deliberate but when I worked at the Public Analysts laboratory, Mr Salmon always seemed to be the inspector that sent in the fish samples.
