I want to set up a product once. ie create one teeshirt. then add colurs and have Actinic create the hidden products for red tshirt, blue tshirt, then i'll add my sizes, and again have actinic create the hidden red small tshirt, and the red, medium tshirt and so one.

Absolutely!!
It's such a long way round doing this the way it's set up.
To be able to give stock levels/weights etc to the choices directly, instead of having to set up hidden associated products, would save HOURS of catalogue building time!

I think the wimmen mean to have all combinations of an expanded product (one with colours and/or size variations), as normal product lines.

Try reverse engineering all the variations into `one product`, rather than the other way round.

I wrote a plugin that took a product with components and attributes and generated all of the hidden products, permutations and associations required - it was brilliant (well I liked it) but I couldn't get anyone interested, the people I wrote it for changed their mind as well, so it got put on the unwanted and unloved shelf (along with my exchange rate mole).

I think the flaw with that Jan was that it would remove the ability to moan on a particular issue. People need to moan, fancy making add-ons that solve issues and attempt to reduce moaning - crazy ethos.

its both, as often I find clients decide not to bother with stock control because they don't want to spend weeks creating the products.
