I don't use them actually, my sites don't need them because everything is the same of a similar type. They will be used more when people use variables more ... actually I will be able to use them on my jewellry site because I want to build up the description detail from variables, so I can have a content category or watches that has variables such as battery type, movement type etc and one for bracelets that has varaibles such as bead type, chain type etc. Woohoo, I can use content categories :-)
Regards,
Jan am i missing something here, as i said never looked into these but are variables not much the same? and they work well in you mash
Content Categories are basically product classifications - so completely different to variables, variables can be limited to certain content categories, and will only appear on objects that are in those content categories. Brilliant idea IMHO - makes data entry and customisation by product type easy peasy. I think that it's a secret though, the sort of thing that no-one really notices is there.
Told you it was the vapour miss bumps, Duncan has got all serious again.
So Jan, you would recommend using these over variables, i have not looked at the mash program but i guess from what you have said i could use these for product typing in the base feed? as opposed to variable which is the way i do it now
After saerching the forum I can't find any difficulties with anyone using catagories - nor any 'notable' questions about them at all in fact. Must give thm a go and see myself.
Its in the wishlist forum Duncan where you read it, on one of my wishlist items, guy had big problems with them. I think this is where Jan was introduced to them also and mentioned looking into producing a report run on content category, which would be great.
I think they are best used in conjunction with variables, not one or the other from what i can gather. For instance define a variable at product level, but only show the variable on products in certain content categories. It can help reduce the number of variables on show on heavily variabled sites, you know the ones where there is only 3 or 4 variables of 20 you have to fill in, but still have to wade through all of them.
1. Realising I actually CAN make design changes on my website and not balls everything up. A good memory!
2. Battling with "out of context" errors.."fixing" one and then having to call using Cover to "fix" my "Fix" (which had actually broke it )
3. Apocalypse Day (aka "The Day When G Lost It")
Best Bits
1. The design tab. I'm with everyone else here
2. Blockifs (yep, I'm another sad supporter)
3. Revert to Factory Settings....oh how you've saved my life many many times!

No, they are not new sorts of variables, they are just ways of categorising the variables that are already there (it's on the 'advanced place of setting' tab in the design library variable editor)
I have fallen out with crystal reports ATM, it doesn't like me anymore, which is why I haven't written the report, when it learns to grow up and act like a proper report generation tool I will probably write the report then.

Jan i take it this must be serious if you have fallen out with it.
Thanks for the tips though, i'm on a course at actinic this month perhaps i can squeeze some info/training on these.
