You mean i have to go read myself and you don't provide me with a step by step instruction? Pah this forum isn't what it's cracked up to be.

    BTW - thank you.

That was the part i didn't get, why our ISPs have DNS tables, why don't we go to a central master register like we do with Nominet for example.
      No, see this....

      http://blog.opendns.com/category/isps/

item is titled - Virgin Media (formerly NTL) allows third-party DNS, including OpenDNS

Yikes - virgin admit they had a configuration issue with their DNS tables

well, I've booted up my old laptop now (well, I say "old"...it's about 9 months old actually) and the forum is 100% ok at home..so it's something to do with the connection on my new laptop

If this one didn't take so bloody long to boot up and run anything, I'd switch to it...might use this one this evening though (cue snapshot import...not even sure which version of 8.5.1 is on here!).... I hate being forum-less in the evening! (repairing my network connection fixes it at the office)

meantime...the hunt continues as to why the other refuses to work, all of a sudden, after 3 months... at 2 different locations

Think I'm jinxed actually (mind you, with the (school)photos of me that have been posted on Facebook today...maybe I am LOL)

oh...and I'm going to be exploring the dns thing. Even using opendns wouldn't work for me yesterday. I think my lappy is just pig-headed...can't think where it gets that from

Even if they are, that doesn't shed much light on why we are having DNS problems with this forum, it won't have changed for ages, so what's the issue here. It seems to fall over if it gets too much work to do (i have this problem too), as though it gets flooded with requests and has a strop and says 'sod y'all i'm doing none of it'.
Lee - At least we can possibly explain why you as a Virgin user ex NTL have a different experience to me Virgin user ex Telewest.

It would be interesting if you swapped to openDNS to see if that improves matters.

Configure your router rather than PC, and flushdns from the Pc. http://www.opendns.com/start/windows.php

Tracey - you are simply stuffed.

Ok have changed the TCP/IP settings on the PC and the router settings to use the open DNS settings. When i go to the test page, it says i'm not using it yet, however on the 2 subsequent tests, it says i am, so who knows lol.

We shall see what happens from now on. TY for your help croccy.

OK changed mine to opendns (pc only) - I'll see how it goes for a few days.

well, I've tried OpenDNS again...and it wouldn't even load the test "welcome" page without timing out!
After 3 or 4 refreshes, it did load it up successfully (I had restarted etc) but it's just as slow as ever.
Downside also being I can't connect to the office network with the OpenDNS settings either so I'd have to change it each time I went there or came home...but as it doesn't work any better anyway, it doesn't matter.

Am in the process of updating the other laptop to HFUA (it was still in HERA) and I'll move a snapshot across with some other stuff to back up and see if I can sort this one out while I'm not working on it.
The other one seems ok (although I haven't spent any significant amount on time on it yet)

This one is still only 80% loaded the page while I've typed my reply! and it's full of broken images etc

Right..gotta tackle this now..enough is enough

                        oh...and Lee

Does that mean Actinic need to sort out their dns records or something?
Can it only a ffect some people though - people only seem to be affected on Virgin/NTL?

I'm not on Virgin or NTL. I'm with BT (at home) and god knows who our network is with at the office (but it won't be a cable network because we don't have cable locally)

I think I'm just jinxed (although it appears to be ok on this other laptop..so far)

I doubt that the problem you're having is the same as Lee & Is. We just have internittent prroblems when the forum just times out - at all other times it's fine.

It seems you are just having continuos problems with it. Odd.

hmmm...maybe my problem is a different one then. I know it started on Friday and has been recurring ever since..but apparently only on one computer (my newer laptop)
I've been on this one (older laptop) all evening and it's been fine.. It must be a local problem on my machine but I just haven't found out what yet!
