That is a great way to explain the problem, makes much more of a point on how bad that really is.

At 98%, unless backhanders and brown paper bags in carparks were afoot, i think you'd have to be pretty mad to consider anything else.

The best way to uninstall Norton is via Symantec's Norton Removal Tool. Somewhat scary that they admit that the programs own uninstaller isn't up to the job!

from what i have read you MUST uninstall the norton first and THEN use the removal tool otherwise it causes loads of problems

            Norton 360

For future reference, a major problem with Norton 360 for average/advanced users is that you can't ask it to scan individual folders or files (eg files you have just downloaded etc) - you have to do a scan of the entire PC

And I switched to AVG after they found a virus that Norton missed... lol.

any port in the storm is a good port,

but once you know there is a problem with one AV product, and you then get it fixed by using another, scout around and see if there is more complete products out there.

Good thread. We use AVG on all machines and it's protected us so far I think! Would not touch Norton or McAfee ever again. Back in the Win 98 days it used to kill PC's to the point where FORMAT C was the only option. It's just too big and tries to do too much. Nero is going down the same road, it wants to be involved in everything.

I will definitely check out the above mentioned, it sounds excellent.

I recently loaded Kaspersky AV and it seems good from what I can see but I do have a couple of 'funny' issues since installing it.

I use Avant Browser mostly as my browser (it's an IE based skin that I find far better than IE), I usually have at least 10 to 15 tabs open at any time in it. Since installing KAV I notice that sometimes not all images are loaded on the page that I requested - in this forum for example I might see that the avatars or small graphics are not loaded - a refresh always loads them. I tried proper IE7 (althouh as I say Avant is IE7 skinned) and it shows the same issues. FF on the other hand never shows the problem. I have tried disabling KAVs protection and it helps make it less frequent but still happens sometimes.

Another thing I notice is with Outlook mail - I have many email accounts that are checked frequently (probably around 30) and I see that some timeout or show error - again only since loading KAV - retrying always works ok. Again I tried disabling KAV protection and it helps but still happens sometimes.

It seems strange that this has only occrued since loading KAV. I also run ZA but have disblaed it's Mail and Spyware checking.

Has anyone else any experience of this happening?

                      that's a bad thing?

I was going to take a look at Kaspersky myself (currently use AVG and find it serves the purpose ok) as I want a more sturdy AV....so I'm watching this thread with interest

NOD32, or as it is now, ESET Smart security.
Good value over 4 units for three years.
                        Good support.
Updates two or three times a day.
No noticeable overhead on the cpu
Doesn't mess up the PC, unlike Norton which as Lee says should be banned.

It hasn't missed a threat yet in two years.
Always comes top in the industry category for finding wild virii heuristically.

It took the best part of a morning to fully eliminate Norton from the machine.
The last Dell we bought had McAfee on it - that took hours to remove too.
                        Kind Regards

A vote for ZA here - great improvement over Norton, which would stop you getting out of bed for your own safety if it could.

PS it is just me, or are some avatars smaller today?!?

Snap - updates constantly throughout the day and when you run a scan you don't even notice your machine slowing up. Norton is like carry a sack of tatties around all day.

                                Users of NOD32

How do you deal with Spam, do you use a seperate filter outside of NOD32?

I quite like the Norton Anti Spam that puts spam in a spam folder within outlook express but NOD32 does not appear to do this, and unwated spam still end s up in the inbox.
