Randoms from New Dehli who phone up and ask for Mister Mac-eeeee and then go on and on about phone/elic-trici-tee/bwoadbaand stuff.

More a phrase than event but there you go.

Phrases. Erm... yeah, 24/7 is a good one, or even `by the end of play today`. Play? PLAY? f***ing PLAY? Yeah, try it again laddie.

        Only ****holes use it Chris.
It just means really cheap; straight from the production line in China.

Another phrase that creases me is "From the get go"

                  Currently popular is
                  "Going Forward"
Usually by some politician, pushy CEO or council wonk.
Makes me rant, on the spot

And, in relation to customers asking for a quote
                  "sharpen your pencil"
I always add 5 or 10% as soon as they come out with that gem and they still buy
                  Usually.
                  Kind Regards

I have a particular fondness for the BT helpdesk service.

"I'm sorry all our agents are busy at the moment. Your call is important to us. Please try again later".

followed by "click burrrrrr" as the call is terminated.

followed by the sound of a BT phone being beaten by it's own receiver and several colourful expletives.

                      "sharpen your pencil"
                      Ooooh. I HATE that one....
Why do I always want to...no, never mind what I want to do with the pencil when they say that.

                      How about -

                      "Thanks for your time"

Translation - Now that I've beaten you down to the lowest possible price, I'm going to call the person I normally deal with and make them beat your price.

"thanks, I will check with N and be back later to buy" = I can't afford that but don't want to appear tight

                              Hit the ground running...

Why are these American phrases becoming so popular?

Because we hear them 24/7 on the TV
