OK how are you running Actinic under linux?

As an aside you can load Ubuntu onto a USB external drive via Windows using the standard Ubuntu install and then boot to the USB driveduring startup. I use a 100Gb usb external with a Dell laptop and works fine, just set USB as first boot option.

Any thoughts on HP Mini Note while we're at it?

Yep that's the one. Haven't had the chance to try one yet, but the 1280 pixel WXGA screen would be a big plus for me.

Gabe - I'm thinking of buying a Linux Mini Note (the only one available at the moment) and installing XP (son has to use Windows). Is this the best/cheapest way of doing it:

                http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx...finement=11004

Sorry if a noob question, but I've never installed an OS before

Also the box says x64 (bit?) version - is this OK or do I need to get a more basic version?

Just found this, which probably answers one of my questions:

                  http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx...finement=11004

                  is OEM OK??

You can't buy OEM unless you buy hardware. It's usually cheaper to buy with XP preinstalled.

Thanks Duncan - can't get XP/Vista Mini Notes at the moment, and I'm in a hurry.........

Does that mean I'm going to have to spend £190 on the OS:

                      ?

You might find the OS cheaper around but ther are many laptops available for under £400 these days with XP/Vista on.
