The problem with these new browsers is that Joe Public hardly ever uses IE and thinks 'my god this is a crap browser, give me something new'. It does what they want and gets them where they want to be. This means that any new browser has such an uphill struggle, unless their browser is included as part of the OS on the PC. Google windows next? I recently swapped my wife's laptop over to use FF as an experiment, she didn't even notice the change and she does a lot of online shopping.

Another discrepancy in figures is that FF is used by around 10% of users, this is utter crap in real terms as 90% of that 10% is probably web designers themselves. I use FF everyday for firebug, would i use it instead of IE if i just needed a browser, i'm afraid not, it's just not that different in real terms from a browsing perspective.

Using FF solely day in day out as a designer also contributes heavily to a number of sites that are launched but inexplicably have not been tested and therefore do not work on IE. For me FF has its place and its loyal following as will Chrome, Opera and the rest of them. FF will always have its place, maybe ultimately it will fall away and be replaced by Chrome, but none of them have a chance of displacing IE for a very long time yet IMO.

The best thing from all the new browsers that launch is the fact that they keep the big boys on their toes. This is why we desperately need some SE competition, if we give too much power to one company, we are no longer in control.

Exactly - unfortunately MS has listened to the vocal few who have been demanding a standards compliant browser which is what ie8 is. Unfortunately it breaks 90% of websites from what I have seen and heard - jo public is not interested in w3c bollocks all they want is a website to work on thier pc. The w3c and standards freaks are in real danger of breaking the internet.

ie8 may force people to modify thier websites so they render correctly but we will see

Malcolm, I totally agree with you.

It's a real thorn in my side.
As a Director of the 'West eBusiness Group' a not-for-profit organisation that puts kitemarks of quality for web design companies throughout the SouthWest, I am sick, tired and fed-up with the debates about the need for strict complience to W3C standards.

If the same level of accessibility complience was imposed on Television, or printed page, half the media companies in this country would fold.

I am all for good standards, but the W3C lot are driven by infuences outside the designers they impose their standards on and the result is weak, ambiguous and inpractical.
Manufacturers of media readers, for example, get to drive a lot of what goes on and to my mind, that is the tail wagging the dog.
I was a Senior Support Engineer in aerospace for 10 years and have worked on both MoD and DoD projects that involve 'Text to Voice' screen-scrapers.
That technology was totaly independent of browsers and worked 10-12 years ago.

Problem is, we let them, (W3C), get away with it!

I am sorry Lee but I cannot agree with you on this one, the statistics from our online yarn shop, not a usual haunt of web designers, shows 82% use IE, 13% use Firefox, 3% use Safari, and 2% for the others, no mention of Chrome so far but then it will need mods to Awstats for that.

As for chrome I have tried it on three PC's two work ok but on the third it refuses to load properly. Not sure why as this PC already has several browsers loaded with no problems.

We are all sweating for Christmas, but it's mainly over when the release date of V9.0.3 will be.

Not at all, your stats are your stats, i can't say they're wrong. I guess my main point (exaggerated yes) was that it's generally IT people with FF, as there are few other ways to get to know about it and more importantly IE doesn't bother the vast majority of surfers. The only person i know on a personal basis that does not use IE is my wife and that's cos i added it onto her laptop.

I am genuinely intrigued as to why yarn buyers is such a high FF % though, it'd be good to know why.

I use FF purely because it has better password management than IE and I use a lot of logins. Probably a bad thing as it's less secure but it makes my day easier.

Can't yet see the point in Chrome. Downloaded it and tried it and it looked like the same internet to me. What is the killer app with this browser? It will certainly need one to get me to switch.
