New Computer - XP or Vista

Right I need to purchase a new computer.

What operating system shall I use - XP or Vista?

I have only briefly used Vista on friends computer so my knowledge is very limited.
XP I know inside and out and feel most comfortable with.
Sooner or later I know I will have to climb the Microsoft evolutionary ladder, but i just want to know what everyones views are on this.

Its the only question left to answer for me to purchase a new computer!

wouldn't be seen dead with vista, a lot of fluff, not a lot of action on an awful lot more hardware !

shop around and look for the vista (downgraded to XP) - the majority of these come with XP installed not vista ( I wonder why)

MS says a lot when they keep extending the purchasing life of XP despite the new vista being available

I would love to wait for Windows 7 as that seems the best option, but its too far away to hang on.

I am right in saying too that Vista is also ALOT more system resource hungry over XP.

So the spec wise using XP, i would get more bang for my buck?

Vista does need lots of ram to work well. I held out for ages before ditching xp but it's ok IMO.

The operating system of choice for developing Actinic, for me is: Windows XP.

Even if you have a multi-core beast, the cpu, resources and complexity of Vista makes it a poor choice for a business oriented operating system. link

So many people, like myself bought a new laptop, or computer ans diddnt even boot up vista. we swapped back to xp straight away.

I understand that people are having a good time with vista, and they it working fine for them, but as of writing, XP can run all your favourite Actinic related applications, faster than Vista, in most counts, that i'm aware of. Including games.

So far as business and security is concerned, Microsoft has openly admitted that User Accounts Control UAC sucks.
"The reason we put UAC into the platform was to annoy users. I'm serious," said [Microsoft's David] Cross.
For me, there is no choice to make. Until Windows 7 ships and can prove its worth, i'll never use vista. I use OSX, with xp guests, in Vmware Fusion. That way, i can keep my Microsoft toys in check.

I installed Windows 7 Build 6801 Pre-Beta when it came out.

Steve Ballmer has described the release of Windows 7, as 'a better Vista'.

Well from using it for a day I have to say I can see no real difference between Vista and 7. I am unqualified to comment on performance
improvements as I was running it on a Parallels VM, but it had a pretty decent spec for a VM.

There are some subtle tweaks, to the UI but thats about as much as I can really spot, the task bar is ripped from Ubuntu (running Compiz). There seem to be even more versions of the OS than before (I count 7 - http://www.flickr.com/photos/b3ndy/3...7608651912330/).

"Windows Vista is good, Windows 7 is Windows Vista with clean-up in user interface and improvements in performance," Quote from Ballmer.

I have been using vista pretty much since it arrived. It has a lot of quirks so dont think its anything like xp, it is not.

SP1 was the biggest improvement with regards bugs, if you reasonably confident with windows and can find you way around the control panel and security settings on xp then you should be ok with vista. But if all you do is turn it on and use it then you could find yourself pulling your hair out when something wont run.

But i have found it to be stable, i have a system here that doubles as an internal mail server (means i dont have to give everyone access to the internet to send emails) and it has been running for 18 months, the odd restart when installing stuff but thats about it.

does this mean that he admitted that the interface needed a cleanup?
