I decided this year to handwrite some Christmas cards and letters!
Buck the hi-tech trend, no more e-cards or jangly, dancy MMS's.

It was a re-education in cramp in the hand and reminded me that I have terrible handwriting. I should have been a doctor!
Was thinking of packaging this "new" service up and calling it the "iWrite" - gotta be a 2009 best seller!

Why get a phone that struggles to get a signal?

Duncan did say "in my area" and that's true of every phone / service provider.

We live in the country and my wife has a 3G iphone on O2 and mine is a jailbroken 2G on T-Mobile. She gets the better signal at home. Go somewhere else and the opposite might apply.

But maybe O2 should spend some money making coverage better, rather than sealing `exclusive` deals with Apple and itunes etc.

Just something that bugs me (bad mobile network coverage).

It does vary - O2 is much better than Vodafone where we are.

interesting thread, at the mo i am clinging on to my raspberry as i can get email very easily where ever i am in the world, i have to make up my mind in july whether to stick with vodafone or to switch to o2/iphone. I'm still inclined to stick with vodafone/pushemail although I'd like to hear how others fare with O2 when overseas as iphone means webmail thus roaming internet charges

No need for tedious webmail. You can happily use POP email on an iPhone. Still encurs roaming charges but POP usually transfers a minimal amounts of data.

Send and receive, only hassle I find is that you can't create additional folders on the iPhone.

Norman - have you tried IMAP with 1and1 to your iPhone? I can only get POP to work.

It does mean that all emails I want mobile access to are sat in my inbox which is a bit of a pain.
That said, the folder options in the settings (where to save etc) are quite good. I like that it can save sent items on the server. that's handy.

Like Mark said, it's WAY more than just a phone. TBH, I use mine FAR more for 'other things' than as a phone although I do make most of my calls through it, from work, to use my inclusive minutes.
I'd text more on it, of course, if it worked
First week of Jan (when kids are back to school and I'm back at work 'properly') I'll send it off.
Be prepared for 'cold turkey' ramblings that week!

No. I use POP for the two accounts I check on my iPhone.

The iPhone works brilliantly with MS Exchange email - you get all your folders plus, of course, constant email / calendar / contacts synchronisation with Outlook and Outlook Web Access (just be careful who you get to host your MS Exchange.....)

1&1 are excellent in my opinion, and I would do everything with them (hosting and domains) were it not for the fact that their servers are not UK based. However, their hosted MS Exchange service (including their support) is bad to the point of being unusable if you have any sort of problem. I get the impression that they wish it didn't exist. I ended up with Rackspace, who are more expensive, but the service and support is a revelation.
