Using about 8mb at the very most per month so have gone onto the Basic package (10 mb max) with is £15 + vat per month.

Everything else stays the same.

And they're sending a free router thingumyjig.

I seem to have missed all the fun today.

What's this about though:

was getting a speed (when adsl worked) of around 1mb. slower than dial-up!!!

Dial up never really went beyond 56k (all they could squeeze down a 64K telephony channel) (and all in bps to avoid Lee any confusion).

we use beunlimted at home, for abut £17 a month, but we get an upload speed of 1mb, actinic flys on uploads. Plus 12mb download speed unlimited.

the office at work our business broadband has about 256k upload and it cost more and is slower, but hey its business conection.

What are the benefits a more expensive 'business' connection hives you?

Presumably its a lower contention rate but other than that...

I run with the Post Office £27 a month 'all in' broadband, line rental & a certain number of calls, can't remember exactly what the deal was. I have no idea what the upload & download speeds are and frankly don't care as this home connection runs four sometimes five laptops two running games & youtube videos when the offspring are home, without any issues whatsoever.

My accountants office runs on Plusnets home service, can't remember what it's called either, sorry, but his office runs eight pc's & 1 laptop on the connection & he doesn't have any problems either and his office runs secure online databases to store all manner of information so the traffic to & fro is heavy.

I think people are missing the point a little, standard broadband connection through copper cables degrades over distance. So depending how far from the exchange you are depends on yout connection speed.

ADSL starts to drop over over a mile, and is a steep downward curve, more than 3 miles and you might aswell use dial up IMHO

Obviously fibre optic does not suffer these problems

I changed my broadband to O2 a short while ago and pay £12.50 a month Including VAT for an 8 Megs connection. Could have saved an extra £5 a month (= £7.50 a month) if I had an O2 mobile. This include a free wireless modem/network box and uses ADSL2plus. I don't use the wireless part, just the cable network connections. Line tests showed the maximun speed at my location would be 9 megs so they didn't try to sell me a faster service. Just checked the speed and am getting 1,178 kbps upload and 6,130 kbps download. This does vary slightly but is normally about the same. Still using my original standard BT phone line and pay line rental only.

We got BT Business Broadband at home, a bit more expensive than the residential version a friend had (he wasn't too happy, which is why we thought we'd try Business). The customer service has been much better, and we get 6mb compared to his 2mb, and he is only 200yds further away from the exchange. Probably a technical reason for this, but you wonder.......

we have business broadband at work as it we are a web based business!
The support we get with the buisness line is fantastic, if the line goes down with a home connection BT can take several days to come out.
With a business contract we have a 24 hour response.
Having used this in the past it is worth the extra.

Also a business line offers you options not availble on a domestc line.
But the key thing is response if something goes wrong.
