Am i being a little blonde here or is a really obvious point being missed? On every actinic site a page called info.html is created for T&C's, on this page you get company name, address, phone numbers and email address detailed. It wouldn't take Einstein to clear up the email address shown to turn it into a usable address, so once you go a Google search using the 'inurl' facility, you will generally find this info (say 80% of the time) in the first 100 words or so on this page of most actinic sites. What is being perceived as hidden and private here?

How they have managed to get non published emails is a little strange for sure and points to something a little sinister, just thought i'd add this info as either i or a lot of people are missing something very obvious on an actinic site.

This would make sense - I used the Javascript method shown in the KB so that 'email@domain.com' is never shown in the source code, but never received the e-mail at the sales e-mail...

In my case it's not the method the email addresses were obtained that's in question but rather the attitude that it is OK to send unsolicited spam emails by the company. Be it legal or otherwise it is spam and I certainly don't consider it ethical.

Won't work on mine - the email address is an image (and I too have received the PostPack solicitations).

They obviously do not care about ethics as they clearly have not found the info via a regular google search as claimed.

The details (including copy to email addresses) are in the xxxxxxx.xxx file.

That's an internal file. We will encrypt the sensitive details in the near future.

yes blonde Lee - many peeps have said the email address harvested is not on their website - this is why this is underhand and causing upset.

I held off reporting them to https://forms.ico.gov.uk/pecr-complaint.aspx yesterday, but i suggest we all do this today.

Like others I use Viking and will continue to do so.

On further inspection I too have also received one of these emails to my personal address that is certainly not listed anywhere on the site to which it referenced.

EDIT - Correction: the personal address used is contained in the copy address field for one of my sites in the file earlier mentioned. It was set up in error by me some time ago.

Question though: Does a file like this that is not listed as such anywhere constitute public information?

i'm glad others are using the word unethical. I was mulling this over last night and got to thinking about the banking crisis etc and was wondering if we had turned a corner with unethical business practices.

I certainly believe that every business has to do what they can to be sucessful but to what extent?

are you a sucessful business if you drive all your competition out of business, or simply a corporate bully?

It was the copy address, yes. Shouldn't have been it is.

                            Can we robots.txt xxxxxxx.xxx ?

                            --EDIT--

But I guess disallowing xxxxxxx.xxx won't stop them looking at it on the server. I wasn't that cross before, but now I am raging

I think we should set up a 301 in the htaccess file to redirect to the homepage - that's what the company in question appears to have done.
