    Hi Lee
I started off worrying about this (7 years ago), so I signed up to a psp.
I put the PSP logo on the title page, and have had two queries since then,
each easy to answer - I do not even bother to put in all the bits about encryption, etc.
I did however, put in SSL at the time - do not waste your time
All people are interested in is that their cards are not going to be misused
If, the site is genuine, and the PSP is revealed, the customer can get their money back
The padlock appears when they input their card details on the relevant page.
In these times, I would be very unhappy to buy on a site which did not have a PSP - one or two exceptions.
We still get customers, who are still nervous about using the PSP - they phone with the details of their cards - or even email them!
We always put them through our PSP
In our experience SSP makes no difference to orders - indeed, I think the fact that you are using another, accredited agency to take the card helps on orders
    Regards
    Howard

      Customer Feedback

We have never received any kind of feedback from customers saying that they have had any problem with the Checkout being secure. Our customers are very vociferous, and we even have an Any Comments where they voice their opinions, many making use of it. None have ever objected to the secure site or said it made it slow. However, we have received over the years a lot of concern about security, made worse by media scaremongering. Some have said that they do not like to give their address details not on a secure site. Others have not understood that we use a psp, even though we publicise it, and/or are concerned that the psp will not be secure, and/or do not know what a psp is even when explained.

It is virtually impossible to tell if or how many orders are lost or gained with or without the security. We know for certain that we have lost orders where customers were concerned about the online security and we declined to take the payment by telephone (why should they be allowed to bypass the 3D Secure on SagePay - it defeats the purpose). We introduced the dedicated certificate rather than shared certificate (free with the hosting package) as we had complaints from customers about the sslrelay address.

"why should they be allowed to bypass the 3D Secure on SagePay"

Well a good reason is that in my experience 3D doesn't work all the time - I've had to phone shops on many occasions to place orders because of this.

Quite possibly, but it's one of the biggest in the UK, so I can't be the only one having problems. To be fair it has got better in the last three months, but I still phone if I see 3D being used

The only problem i ever have with 3D is the password as you cant use old ones - thus end up making new ones and promptly forget it.

Having said that back to the OP - does having your own ssl secure server increase orders?

It is necessary to realise that you aren't going to please all the people all the time. you are always going to loose orders in the checkout phase regardless of anything you do.

Some people bail out of a checkout if they see PSP, some bail out if they see SSL, some people just change their mind. Some people are freaked if the see a change of URL ie shared SSL or PSP.

If SSL doesnt slow your checkout out and it is cost effective to you then there is no reason not to add it if you really feel it makes a difference (although i would advocate a dedicated SSL). If you are happy with PSP alone then stick with it.
