Thanks for the idea Gabe - I'll have a look. We should be using something like that, but everyone's happy with the Excel system, and they would resist me suggesting a better system so I could use my iPad..........

        Simply use something like CutePDFwriter
Makes printing to PDF a doddle.

Fergus - doesn't run on the iPad, unless you had some other way in mind. I guess someone will come up with an app at some point, but none so far.

Sorry Mark, misread the context as you remotely viewing a PC based machine via iPad
I'm surprised there isn't a PDF app out there already?

No probs. In theory, everything could be done by logging in remotely, but this is very clunky and slow especially over a 3G connection (since the iPad should really shine when "on the road"), and because we use 1920x1200 monitors in the office which present a challenge even to the iPad screen.

A PDF printing app (linked to Dropbox) would be a killer, but none exists. The cynical bit of me thinks that Apple think this would be just too useful for some of us using Excel (which is why they also didn't offer iWorks Numbers to Excel functionality, although Numbers WILL create PDFs which can be emailed)........

The cynic in me thinks that anything with an Adobe label is going to struggle to do anything on a machine with an 'i'in front of it's name!

I've always been an Apple-Phobe (not to mention being an i-orexic).
Then one day we were visiting someone who had an iPad.
I've never seen the missus's eyes light up at anything like they did then .
So now she's the proud owner of one and she loves it. For some reason she's never been particularly au fait with computers, but is positively whizzing along on the 'Pad.
Is this a girl thing then?
                  Kind Regards

Don't think so - all my 4 boys (one is a grown up) use the iPad whenever they can:

                    • Facebook
                    • Calendar
                    • Conquist
                    • Angry Birds (inevitably)
                    • You Tube
                    • Doodlejump
                    • Osmos
                    • Kindle

And much else besides. So much so, that when it was my birthday a few weeks back, they bought me one of my own as I couldn't get on it!

                      what about a "cr*p" day.
daughter, end of 2nd yr uni, going to yr3, just got a phone call to say
sorry, but you sat the WRONG exam when you came in last time, you did yr1 exam not yr2 exam - not our fault, you should have read the paper

please come in tomorrow (36hr notice) and re-sit this yrs exam, can't guarantee a place for you though, as you've "technically failed last year"
so now, got a distraught daughter, pannicking over whether she gets through and all the uni says is "you should have made sure you sat the right exam"

                      talk about a cr*p day

Sorry for her Kev. It'll be interesting to see how many other students are resitting because of the same problem. Surely they only let the students see the correct papers. Sounds like some small print and covering their backsides to me.

won't actually know until tomorrow, it'll be interesting to see if anyone else turns up, or if its "all her fault"

its a real shame, she's planned her three years, gone and secured 2.5 days a week doing high quality vouluntry work to boost the "total package being offered to the prospective employer(s)", and it can all go down the tube because she was given the wrong paper.

Something is going wrong in the world, and its not all our fault.

                            Sympathies, Kev.

Who told her to be in a certain place at a certain time?

My youngest has been accepted to the Constabulary, given a start date - then the new government put the kibosh on that - she does not know whether she's in or out.

it was the invigilator, "go and sit at this desk . . . etc"
as part of the process, you also fill in a slip of paper saying what row, desk and module you are doing, as evidence that you attended, but "they seem to have mislaid this part of the evidence"

lets hope your daughter gets to do what she wants as well

                                just a quick follow up,
the daughter re-sat the exam 48hrs after being told she sat the wrong exam, didn't do it as well as she had expected, all a bit of a tizz with worry at the time as you can imagine, and last night, heard that "you've passed the correct exam, you can go back to uni this year for your final year"

what a lot of palava (if thats the right spelling) 2-3 weeks of pure worry, it wasn't even as though they were going to be able to give her place to someone else

so, once again, the household is restored back to its normal serene state, we can go to sleep knowing that she will be able to go out and continue to rack up a hugh overdraft at our expense
