It would be very useful to be able to see the product weight and the total weight of the order on the Packing List report.

I'm trying to understand this. Is the problem that you're unable to create a modified report to do this? or do you think it's something that would be widely applicable?

Both.
I think it is very useful to know the total weight of the order on the PL.
The shipping weight and associated data is stored in a memo field in the database and as such is not able to be manipulated in CR.Comment

For the majority of sites you can just convert the opaque shipping number to a number ie Val() it.
