Before starting, it is recommended you ensure your computer is fully up to date via Windows update otherwise installation may fail. To do this go to Start | Control panel | Windows update. After installing updates, check again to see if there are anymore and install then, repeat this process until there are no updates left.
Press close to complete the wizard. You can now begin to configure SQL Server with SellerDeck

- The first screen you will see when running the SQL Server installer is the ‘SQL Server Installation Centre’. Here you choose how to plan an install, perform an install, maintain or repair an install etc
- You want to choose the ‘Installation’ option from the list on the left:
and then ‘New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation’ from the main screen. - This will open a new window, which begins the setup wizard. The first screen prompts you to install and setup support rules:
Ideally you want to see a list of ticks as in the image above. Press OK when complete. - The next screen prompts you for your product key. This will determine if you have ‘Standard’, ‘Developer’, ‘Enterprise’, ‘Workgroup’ etc
Press Next - You now need to agree to the Microsoft Software Licence Terms
Tick the I accept box and press Next - Now SQL Server needs confirm if you would like to include the SQL Server Product updates.
- The tick box should be ticked, so just click Next
- The next screen will download and install the product and updates
- Now SQL Server needs to setup the Support Files
Again, you want to see a list of ticks. If there are any failures or warnings, you will be able to view the details by clicking the link on the right.
When done, press Next - Now it Checks your Product Key again just make sure it’s the same and click Next
- You now need to agree to the Microsoft Software Licence Terms
Tick the I Accept box and click next - The next section will ask you to select the Role of the SQL Server
Select the Role you require and click next - The next screen is the ‘Feature Selection’. For SellerDeck, you only need ‘Database Engine Services’ and ‘Management Tools – Complete’.
But you can choose more options if you want. When you have selected the features, press Next - Now SQL Server will check to see if the installation process will be blocked by anything.
Again, you want to see a list of ticks. If there are any failures or warnings, you will be able to view the details by clicking the link on the right. - Now we are at the point of the ‘Instance Configuration’. Each install of SQL Server is called an ‘Instance’. You can have multiple instances of SQL Server installed.
It is suggested that you use a ‘Named Instance’ rather than the default.
Choose a name and then press Next - The next screen tells you how much disk space is required to install this new Instance of SQL Server
Press Next - Now we come to the ‘Server Configuration’ screen. Choose an option from the ‘Account Name’ column and make sure the ‘Startup Type’ is ‘Automatic’
Press Next - There are a few things to do on the ‘Database Engine Configuration’ screen. The first is to select ‘Mixed Mode’ in the ‘Server Configuration’ tab.
Now choose a password for the built in SQL Server administrator account. The built in username is ‘sa’ (lowercase).
Then click the ‘Add Current User’ button to add yourself as an administrator by default.
Now click the ‘Data Directories’ tab
This is where you can set the default directories used for storing the SQL data files (i.e. the databases themselves and the log files etc) and also where the default backup directories are.
You can leave them as default, which is within the installation directory in Program Files or you can set a different location.
When you are happy, press Next - The ‘Error Reporting’ screen is next
Choose if you want to send reports to Microsoft or not, and press Next - Now we come to the ‘Installation Configuration Rules’ screen
Again, we want to see a list of ticks. Press Next when complete - The ‘Ready to Install’ screen gives you a summary of your chosen options for this new instance of SQL Server
Press Install - Again, we want to see ticks at the end of the ‘Installation Progress’
Press Next - Your SQL Server installation is now complete
Press close to complete the wizard. You can now begin to configure SQL Server with SellerDeck
