    Upgrade within V18 question

    I need to upgrade from 18.12 to 18.22 as support have recommended this to solve some issues, while retaining my PayPal cards option as 18.23 would end this.

    My dilemma is during the upgrade I recall the software asks if you wish to upgrade layouts or not.....I do not know the best answer and fear getting this wrong would be irreversible.

    Any advice appreciated.

    Ed,

    You'll need to upgrade the layouts, because new features won't work if you don't. The automatic upgrader creates a log which shows you which layouts were updated, and what the updates were. It will also show you whether any updates failed, so that you can then apply them manually.

    Make a temporary copy of your Site1 folder before upgrading, to make it easy to reinstate 18.1.2 if you need to.

      Thanks John, doesn't reinstating 18.12 mean removing all traces of 18.22 from the pc to then install 18.12?

        There could be some implication for the Swift layout if applicable that needs to be considered first - see post below:

        Suggest you contact SD support for guidance.

          That's correct, uninstall 8.2.2 then reinstall 8.1.2 and replace the Site1 folder with your backed-up 8.1.2 site folder.

            So uninstall 18.22 but leave documents folder alone where site 1 resides?
            Then install 18.12, then drop the old site 1 folder into documents replacing the 18.22 site 1 folder?

              Yes, although I think the Site1 folder you'll be replacing will have been created when you installed 18.1.2, so will contain a factory 18.1.2 site. But it doesn't matter because you're replacing it. And you'll only have to do any of this if the upgrade goes catastrophically wrong, which hopefully it won't.

              I usually do upgrades on a spare PC then refresh the website in test mode. With the upgrade from 18.1.2 to 18.2.2 it's particularly important to do test transactions on all payment methods to make sure the checkout is working properly.

              When I'm happy everything's working I repeat the process on my live PC and refresh the website in production mode.

                That's my concern, the checkout is now really good and it would be awful if the upgrade reverted to the standard one.

                Not something I can fix afterwards as Dean James at SD fixed it for me with some slight of hand I can't even get close to!

                  Ok a further question sorry.
                  One support agent has advised NOT to upgrade layouts during the upgrade to avoid losing some important changes I had done to the checkout.

                  Will doing this still upgrade core essentials but just essentially leave customisations alone?

                  For example I do obviously want security updates and version bug fixes.

                  I do not also want to undo thd recent paypal fix.

                  Thanks

                    I believe the upgrader will replace script files with new ones, so you may need to re-apply the PayPal fix whatever you do.

                    Probably best to let support guide you through the upgrade if you don't want to take a "try it and see" approach. Just don't do it on a Friday!

                        The checkout fix Dean kindly did was to move the checkout-buttons from Order 02 into the Payment Phase

                        Plus some style tweaks:

                        Code:
                        .checkout-buttons {
                        clear: left;
                        margin: 15px 0 !Important;
                        position: relative;
                        }

                        .ml5 {
                        margin-left: .5em !Important;
                        }

                        .clearfloat {
                        clear:both;
                        height:0;
                        font-size: 1px;
                        line-height: 0px;
                        }

                        .btn-red {
                        color: #fff !Important;

                        border-color: #dc3545 !Important;

                          Excellent now it's immortalised!

                          I have seen a real improvement in abandoned cart numbers now.

                          I also changed cart everywhere to basket to help avoid customers assuming its a non UK based website.

                            John and Ed

                            PayPal cards is available in 18.2.2 as is. You do not need to go to 18.2.3

                            Ed's 18.1.2 site upgrades straightforwardly* to 18.2.2 without any issue that I can see..

                            * is that a word?

                            Best wishes J

                              Thanks Jonathan..so say no to layout upgrades during the process to avoid losing fixes, but unfortunately I assume some benefits are lost.
