    single product per page

I'm just contemplating getting and using the single product-per-page plugin. Have I understood it correctly - that the structure change is only visible to search engines, and not visible to the user?

Are there any pitfalls I should know about? Or tips on using?

My site is www.ourtext.co.uk, and as you'll see, in "Merton reprints" there must be about 600 string quartets on one page.

Hi John, This is the first message I have replied to so I hope it comes out right.
If it is the Single Product per Page by Codepath then I find it excellent together with the support. It has been used on www.inkjetcartridgesandtoner.com and already Google is bringing up the single pages. You can also undo it all if required. Not sure what you mean by 'structure page' but as far as I understand it is all visable.

The only negative thing which hopefully is temporary is Actinic 10.02 runs much slower with lots of Sections. Taking a snapshot and uploading the site takes considerably longer. I understand Actinic are working on this as I think the older versions did not suffer this problem.

It depends how you structure it, I decided to use the SPP then have all the info in the product page without resorting the the full info / or pop up, I only use the full info for a larger image if required.

I do not know how far you have gone but to start this after your site is done is maybe best using a plugin like section generator.

I would say that it will definitely be a change that is visible to the customer, they will have to click through an extra section to get to the actual product that they want to buy. You can format the parent sections in a way that it looks similar to what you have though.

It is visible to the customer because they will only see one product per page.

          For example, your page:

          http://www.ourtext.co.uk/acatalog/2_...la__cello.html

which will be made up of a section (2 violins, viola, cello) with loads of products under it.

and one of my pages of sections:

          http://www.patchwork-rabbit.co.uk/ac...-patterns.html

and a product from that section:

          http://www.patchwork-rabbit.co.uk/ac...blessings.html

which is made up of the section "Angel patterns", containing 5 more sections (one for each product).

I would say, though, that unless you have something to say about each one (I do, but haven't filled it in yet, I just want to get my stock up there and will flesh it out later) and perhaps have an image, then it's not worth doing.

For example, I sell threads. They're all the same except for colour, so I don't bother putting them on their own pages:

          http://www.patchwork-rabbit.co.uk/ac...colours-a.html

600 products is too many for one page, though. I think I've read that bots will give up indexing after a certain amount. Is there another way of classifying them? Composer or date or something?

            John,

I'm still very happy using the modified (non-popup) Extended Information page here (http://enaissance.co.uk/acatalog/info_2942.html) and would see no reason for going down the alternative one-section-per-product approach to SPP, and I really don't fancy introducing all those sections into the Actinic app.

The only drawback (which I'm still mystified hasn't been addressed in a v10 product!) to using the extended info page is that products do not have a field in which to enter meta keywords and description (which sections do have) but that's a quick fix by adding a new variable and a minor extended info page code tweek.

This way we let the search engines trawl the site as they wish, but link directly to the extended info pages from Google Adwords and Shopping links.

This is a valid approach for older sites that would take considerable time to convert otherwise.

My biggest issue with this method is this It would help enormously to ensure that, on creation, the extended info page names are meaningful. Anything better than info_2942.html

Of course, with an established site, that's risky business. Either you're going to need a lot of time, patience and redirects or you're going to lose your indexed pages as you change the page names.

You could have it that the add to basket is still on the section page with the single pages created more for SEO, to save one step of ordering if required.

Even on our newer sites we're sticking with the extended info approach.

I knew someone would comment on that page name but for now they're not a high priority on that site. Our other sites have appropriate names. Good points about changing the names though, thanks.

Yeah, that's the approach we use, although the single pages are done more for customer information that for SEO, but obviously work for both.

                      .
Their is no reason not too change the page title when you create an extended info page to what-ever you want. eg http://www.plantsforshade.co.uk/acat...a_caramel.html is an extended info page. Old pages are a problem but if you change them do it very slowly, keeping an eye on webmaster tools for google complaining about missing pages with inbound links and then use redirects.

                        I wasn't implying you couldn't change it.

Blimey! I turn my back for 24 hours and come back to find the thing's grown like Jack's beanstalk. And I'm somewhat out of my depth.

When I talked to Codepath some time back they said SPP would leave the site unchanged as far as the user was concerned, but enable Google to digest it.

The area where I was proposing to apply SPP is the newly-added "Merton Reprints". If you look at a section like

                          http://www.ourtext.co.uk/acatalog/M-...-quintets.html

you'll find a deplorable number of quintets by Onslow (I counted 26 of the wretched things). The product entry is extremely compact, and there's _no_ extended info. That's the way it needs to be. Anyone looking for an Onslow quintet (I believe there are such people) would want to scroll down, not navigate from page to page. I thought, after talking to Codepath, that an unchanged layout was what they'd get.

Most of this repertoire is available for free download on IMSLP (we donated it, in a version that can't readily be printed, and that hasn't had my huge legibility improvements made). If you Google one of these pieces of music, you get the IMSLP page, but not mine. And I am the publisher !!!

Where the heck do I go from here?

I realise that in the above I may just have partially answered my own question. I said there are no extended info pages. Maybe there should be? Because those at least are, to Google, single-product pages.

Have I glimpsed what some of the contributions above were getting at?

Have a read of the sections and the spp tutorial on my site, you'll get the concept better than i'd say.
