Blimey! I turn my back for 24 hours and come back to find the thing's grown like Jack's beanstalk. And I'm somewhat out of my depth.

When I talked to Codepath some time back they said SPP would leave the site unchanged as far as the user was concerned, but enable Google to digest it.

It's possible that, by "user", they mean YOU not the customer?

My thanks to all the above. Some of it I haven't got my head round yet, but it's clear I need to do some serious thinking before I move.

At present it looks to me as if I can either satisfy Google's notion of a good "user experience" or the convenience of my customers, but not both.

You can get the best of both worlds with a bit of effort on the coding front - as suggested before you can add an add to cart facility at the section level and have a single product sitting inside the section. You can see the concept on a work in progress site at

what you see there are the section layouts set 2 across. This allows you to add to the cart - if you need more info about the product when you click onto the image or the detailed info link you are taken to the product which sits in its own section.

Google is happy with the single product page and the buyer can buy the product without having to dig any deeper.

OK, I begin to see the landscape opening up. There's one section of my catalogue where adding the cart button at section level wouldn't work. Can that be done at section level, or it strictly a site option?

You can mix and match, create one layout with and one without and then select them accordingly.
