problems getting new custom variables to show in existing products

    v803

I have many products and make use of customVars alowing the user to make a note of the manufacturer etc.

I decided to introduce a new custom var, (actually it was to show when I lst purchased from this particular product ) I've set all the settings to allow the variable to show up but thats the problem, it does NOT show up in ANY existing products.

If I create a NEW product, the existing variables show up AND the new one I've just created also show up. I can create custom tabs for my variables, but that doesn't make any difference to the existing products.

I havn't played with it, but my guess is that its the same with fragments etc

Is there a re-build that I can run to force the new custom variables to show up ?

just upgraded to v804 - no difference, the problem still exists.

Had a similar issue when importing products, which resolved by clicking on the Category drop down for the products concerned and selecting the 'duplicated' for some reason - Standard - drop down option, so might be the same, so an idea to look at.

BTW: I had to click Apply for it to take after changing the category to the same duplicated one, for which it then showed them all correctly.

Now there's a quirky bug ! (with a cumbersome work around if you have 1000's of products)

I can click on an old product, look on the "custom properties-tab" (a tab name I created), the new custom variables are NOT there.

I then click on the "general-tab" of a product, and then drop down the "category" - here I can clearly see FOUR versions of the "standard category" (don't know why there's four versions)

I choose any other category, (albeit "standard" again) and then look in my "custom properties-tab" - the new custom variables have turned up.

there seems to be something going wrong but at least we can work around it.

one thing to note here, I have a text value in one of the variables, defaults to the parent() and if you change this to a pre-set value of "unknown", the new value is NOT bought in, it makes no difference if you change the category either.

just thought I'd mention it incase anybody else hopes this will get fixed.

many thanks for the clues, it worked a treat,

The "bug" still needs fixing though.

I've just created a custom variable for a "CHOICE" - initially, it doesn't show up again, but if you change the "category" on the choice then go and click on the "attribute", then click back on the "choice", the new variable appears.

again, a quirky bug, but we can work around it - needs fixing.

Yes, definately a bug, just we have not been able to isolate where it occured during our process yet, but one amongst a number of them for the site we were working on, so a work around yes, but we had to do this on approx 1600 products, clicking the category for each of them to get all of the variables to show and custom tabs to show, so was not nice as you no doubt know yourself now.

            Have a good Christmas.

eyes peeled for the fix notification.!

I still havn't got a bug fix for the problem whereby all my fragments have suddenly turned into real products with real auto-generated product numbers, again when you start looking down the list of "linked products" and only 1 in 10 is a real product - th rest are fragments, you start to get a problem.

              thanks for the fix though

I would suggest you get in touch with Actinic Support regarding this issue, They would need to pass it onto one of our developers

forgive me for asking, but now that you know its an issue, why can't you pass this on to development.

surely not every bug discovered needs to be raised by "formerly contacting actinic" before its declared a bug.

I doubt that Nadeem is passing the buck. Techno-Web did say that they weren't sure how it occurred so it may well be best if they pass their unique situation on to Actinic.

I usually post bugs that I've discovered via this Forum as separate "Bug Report..." type posts. These always seem to get noticed and acted upon by someone appropriate. The fact that there is a bug may get lost if it's only mentioned deep down in a threads development.

I try to show the bug happening on the default demo site by describing the steps that lead to the problem, why I think it's happening and a kludge / workaround (if I can find one) in case someone needs to get around it right now. This way Actinic support can see the bug themselves on a clean site and not have to worry that it's a side effect of something odd that happened sometime earlier in the site's development.

Leisure time now. Off to boot Vista and see if its FreeCell still has the display bug that's been there since Windows 95!

                      So much for FreeCell!

I just tried to duplicate this bug in 8.0.4 on a default demo site and failed to reproduce it. New Variables show up everywhere as soon as they're defined.

Then I tried on a big 8.0.4 site with thousands of products and the problem happens every time!

It's only on sites with many products it seems to be happening.

I do have a workaround for those with thousands of products.

                      1) Do a Database Backup and create a Snapshot just in case.

                      2) Do File / Export the Catalog to a CSV file.

                      3) Do File / Import / Hierarchical. Use the file just written as input. Choose Replace when asked to Update or Replace.

Now all product show the variable as available.

sorry, don't mean to imply that Nadeem is passing the buck,
I'm happy to report it, and supply a relativly small database on which to play

I have a small site with just 50-60 products and within that, I can reproduce the bug whereby the new CustomVar does not show automatically, and also the strange ability to turn fragments into real products (they (the fragments) all now show up in the dropdowns of the permutations and generally get in the way)

I can't guess where the bug(s) started, all I know is that they are now there and both bugs are already manifesting themselves on a site with 2000+ products,

Now I know that a simple export / import will do one of the jobs, the prospect of hours of silly ammendments can be avoided.

I had a good go trying to get this bug to work on a newly created default demo site. Frustratingly, nothing went wrong.

If you use this Export / Import fix, please make sure you do a Database Backup and Snapshot first. The import is an Import / Replace so if anything was to go wrong there a lot of your products could disappear. I'd hate to recommend a fix that breaks anyones site.

Also note that Import / Replace of all products makes the ActinicCatalog.mdb much bigger, so it's a good idea to do a Compact Database sometime afterwards as that brings it back down to a normal size.

Never was too much into Freecell , I kinda liked Minesweeper, especially since it didn't change from Windows 3.11

Norman, I too tried getting this 'bug' to work on a default store, and like yourself, I couldn't recreate the issue which is why I suggested to pass the Actinic Support. But if it is possible, if you was to email me at communityadmin [@] actinic.co.uk, I could give you an ftp address which you can upload a snapshot, so I can recreate this issue and log a bug report for this.
