Making Paypal a bit more useful

    Hi everyone.
In brief: After taking advice on the forum I'm setting up Paypal as my PSP. Functionally it seems to work well; the only downside is the wording and look of the 'handover page' to paypal which might put-off customers. I think this can easily be improved but need a little help.

I've put more info below, but basically I'd like to change the text and button on the handover page, and can't find where to do that. Can someone tell me where I can find the text and button?

The text currently reads "Click the paypal button to go to Paypals secure server and process your payment". The button says "Paypal Buy Now"

I'd like to change the text to read something like:
"Click the button to pay securely with your credit or debit card".

I'd design a button that reads "Go to secure payment area"

    I'd add a 2nd line that reads:
"We use Paypal's merchant service to process your credit / debit card payment. If you prefer, you can choose to pay using your paypal account, but don't feel under any pressure to"

    In more detail:

I'm using paypal for its ability with credit cards not because I want users to use their paypal account - obviously paypal would prefer it the other way around as they make more money that way.

I fear users will think they need a paypal account because the current handover page mentions paypal and has the paypal logo. Most people who have heard of paypal have done so from ebay and know if often means having a 2nd balance in there.

The landing page into Paypal pushes users to use their payment account. (You have to scroll down on some screen resolutions to see that there is a choice to pay by credit card). If I (we!) haven't warned them of this trick, I fear we will loose sales at this point.

Once you've chosen the credit/debit card option, the next page still gives you the chance to use your paypal account. I wonder if it would be better / possible to 'land' on that second page rather than the first.

I'm assuming paypal would prefer paypal to paypal transactions as they make their 3% and keep it all. If its a Visa to payapl transaction, they will have to give visa their 'cut'

    Thanks for any help

I was hoping to get some simple up-to-date advice on choosing and setting-up a first facility to take online payments.
The advice to use paypal was based on your other post - the advice to use Paypal was given for its simplicity in setting up as a first step on the PSP ladder.

The bounce page can be modified in the design tab - as for the way Paypal works then it is up to you to decide if it is suitable for your business - the are many threads about Paypal and its merits so PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE lets not get into all that again.

Sorry Malcom, not wanting to upset anyone or restart a past debate.

I thought the point I'm making about the wording is very relevant. I've looked at a few sites (including the smokehouse) and they all suffer what I consider to be this weakness.

Paypals advertises itself as a credit card processer for websites, yet the way things currently look with Actinic it appears at first glance that it wants / requires users to have an existing paypal account. Many might abandon at this point.

It looks a very easy mod (admitedly beyound my very limited skills it seems) to slightly change the wording (which I've done through 'text' in other areas) and design a new button (which again I've acheived with a add to cart button) to make a huge improvement.

I was hoping I'd found something that would be useful to the whole community rather than just asking for free help all the time.

The last page under Actinic (and therefore our) control is the bounce page. Malcolm has told you how to reach that page to make any adjustments you want to make.

Just in case you did not understand, if you select the design tab (from the choice of content - design - orders) and then look for the dropdown selector and choose PSP Bounce Page.

Which page you land on in Paypal and the order of payment options on that page is controlled by Paypal. Acinic has no influence on that at all. If you would like Paypal to change their interface with Actinic, then this should be discussed on Paypal's community forum [Oh - they do not seem to have one....].

          Thanks Bill and Malcom

I was / am a bit confused by the advice....When I look at the psp bounce page as advised, it isn't the page I'm getting. In the design page the text reads "Click next to go the providers secure server and process your credit card details with complete confidence", but when I test the system I'm seeing "Click the paypal button to go to Paypals secure server and process your payment" - so I'm assuming I haven't found the right page. Also the button is a plain 'Next>' on the design page where I see the "Paypal Buy Now" button in real life.

I completely understand the fact we can't amend the all mighty and powerful Paypal, but was hoping my idea would give custmers a bit more confidence before we throw them over the fence.

          Thanks again.

I dont consider this a weakness at all - The Smokehouse uses Paypal because people want to use paypal so it is important that they see the Paypal button. If they want to pay by credit card then that site also has HSBC as a PSP.

For what you are trying to achieve you may need to do like the Smokehouse and use multiple PSPs rather than trying a one size fits all approach.

I agree with everything you've said Peter.

I was in the same bout.

The file you need to edit is OCCpaypaltemplate.html

Be warned if you make an global changes the site your old version will be replaced.

So keep a copy in notepad and then you can change it after.
