I hope this is sorted now - Actinic suport asked me for snap shot, and then asked me to delete one product, and purge.

It worked a treat - www.devotedly-discus.co.uk

I cant tell you what was wrong or why ( although I have asked) as naturally I want to avoid it ha[[ening again.

Just to conclude this copied and pasted below suports response.

In truth, we do not yet have an answer, it has been under investigation for
a while.
We suspect that copying 'attributes, components and choices' as a block,
without an associated product causes this, but it is not reproducible every
time and the factors governing it are proving elusive.
We have seen that creating a product, with components, attributes and
choices and then copying the product, and editing the whole thing, does not
reproduce the error.
