I have a similar problem, I'm also happy with my 'non-standard' 850 and don't want to have to upgrade all other sites for the sake of an odd site at 851x. I was hoping I could keep all as is until 86x.

It is a pain in the ass if you upgrade your version as any clients who need some work doing, have to be upgraded before you can do it. Although the idea of version control on your PC and downward compatibility is a nice idea, realistically we cannot expect that IMO.
It's rock and a hard place time, we all want extra features added, yet we want to retain the old versions when it suits us, we can't have it all, so lets keep them focused on improvements and not version dependent software. Once you've gone to 8.5.1, i don't think there is a sensible way back. Only option is a second PC in my eyes.

Yep - one of the main missions of v8 was to encourage developers / designers onto the Actinic band-wagon .... if we are not able to support clients on different versions this is going to be a real issue.
Do we upgrade to the latest version and then force our clients to follow suit... risking upsetting their installation and the inevitable free support required to get them up and running again, all because your latest client has a newer version?
Previous 3rd digit patches were compatible back and forth to newer and older versions .... it was the changes in the 2nd digit that forced major upgrades and subsequent patches. This seems to have been over looked on the v8.5.1 release and should surely have gone to v8.6.0 which would then allow us to provide "legacy support" on versions v8.6.0 though v8.6.9.

For the first time in my experience, they are listening to/contacting developers and being honest on the forum. Chris Dicken's "we fked up" was the most refreshing thing i have read on here in 2 years and i think it marked a line in the sand for all of us. It cannot be easy to come out and say, so credit where it's due IMO - that single post gave me the faith that we should stick around and it will be OK.
I think the future looks good, as long as the bad press been surrounding V8 has not done too much damage. It's an incredible shame, because stupid bugs and upgrade problems aside, i think it's a very good product - one i enjoy using almost everyday. The more you push this product, the more you find little gems and functionality that have become overshadowed by naive upgrades and antiquated testing and communication systems.
We now have the V8, we would have all liked 12 months ago. Those two characters "V8" hold so many feelings for so many people and i personally believe, the quicker V8 is superceded, the better. I'd like to see V9 released pretty soon and let this mark a line in the sand on how they develop this software, communicate with their users/developers and move their business and communication into the 21st century.
I think we need to back them and support them, accept anything that has already happened and look forward. Almost every company goes through a bad year at some time in their existence, i think they're just emerging from theirs. The future looks bright IMO, i just hope they understand that we need some great bug-free releases in the near future that have been properly tested and communicated. They are skating on thin ice, with global warming right up their backside at the moment. I for one, will be around to either see them fall through the ice or skate off into the sunset.

shall i add this to the wish list
Having to buy separate PCs for each incremental version is ridiculous!
At the very least I want Designer and MS to be able to run different versions alongside each other - just like you can with v7 and v8 for example. I don't think that is too much to ask - nor do I think it would be a great effort to achieve.
I think issues with designer/client support is being grossly passed over. This is much more than a wish, it is a basic requirement for designers to support their clients.
Comments please Actinic.........

Maybe strange that I of all people should stick up for Actinic here but remember v8 being so, so different from v7 its almost like v1 all over again. The methods of using outer layers, blocks, even a real grip on the css have made a massive change to the functionality of the product when they'd maybe taken Mark I with the template method as far as they could go. If they can get v8 sorted in so much that everything its supposed to do actually works, then they'll have a good platform base to add some more serious tuning up in the years to come.

I have rarely found any problems upgrading a site when you use the 'do not upgrade my site' option or the 'add to library' option. As part of a quote, i now ask clients if they would like their site upgraded to the latest version as part of the work for £x.xx.
If they say no, then i just use of the previously mentioned options.
