Thanks for that - I unchecked SSL and it now works but what does this mean for secure payment? What can I do to make sure the info is encrypted when sent during checkout?

As Jo said, really you should be looking at a PSP, collecting card details will mean you will be required to become compliant to new card rules due july. Theres a thread around here about PCI DSS

for a start you can use paypal or nochex with easy setup, then look towards other processors like protx, worldpay and actinic who are about to introduce there own service.
