moving catalog data between sites

Why are you recommending I take a backup and a snapshot when a snapshot supposedly contains everything necessary for a backup?

Actually I was suggesting a full system backup or at the very least a backup of the entire Site folder. Just standard belt-and-braces security.

This forum is littered with posts from people who've managed to lose their entire site (usually because of hardware failure), but large scale tinkering can have an equally disastrous effect.

I'm having some really odd snapshot behaviour actually.

If I try to import a snapshot I took this morning (or one I took last night that's pretty similar) the design is a mess, layouts all over the place, button images missing.

If I create a new site, and import either of the snapshots in it looks pristine - exactly as I left it when I took the snapshot. Is this in any way expected?

Anyway, I'm going to go away and rebuild my site from this morning's snapshot and attempt the hierarchical export/import described earlier. Thanks all.
