There's lots of downsides really! The stock control's just been the biggest show stopper so far. Coming from a web-app (JSP etc) background, I have found building an interesting site on static pages limiting and curiously archane. As you rightly said, search engines have been fine with dynamic sites for many years (aka many software development lifecycles!).
It'd be such a shame to bail out as the site is running well, the staff are all trained in using it, and it's a costly business redeveloping anew. The PC software is also fairly neat and sufficiently extensible for basic eCommerce, and this support forum is an excellent and friendly trove of knowledge. Gah! What a nuisance.
