    Hi Mal,

There's lots of downsides really! The stock control's just been the biggest show stopper so far. Coming from a web-app (JSP etc) background, I have found building an interesting site on static pages limiting and curiously archane. As you rightly said, search engines have been fine with dynamic sites for many years (aka many software development lifecycles!).

It'd be such a shame to bail out as the site is running well, the staff are all trained in using it, and it's a costly business redeveloping anew. The PC software is also fairly neat and sufficiently extensible for basic eCommerce, and this support forum is an excellent and friendly trove of knowledge. Gah! What a nuisance.

    Thanks again!

      Stock control plug in

      Oliver (and others)

Before you jump ship from Actinic, I've been developing a plug-in that effectively does 'live' stock control. It works through modifications to some of the perl scripts so that they read from and write to a stock file on your website. We have been running it for a few weeks now on a live V9 site and it has been tested on V7 and V8 by me (and a couple of other Actinic designers / developers). It is intended to get over the main limitations in that it prevents customers ordering out of stock items or ordering more than are currently available. It also includes a program you install on your PC to synchronise the Actinic stock with the online data, which you need to do when you make off-line adjustments such as cancelling an order or adding in more stock.

The first release of 'ActiveStock' is nearly ready to go (a V9 version is complete, just adding a help file) and I hope to make it available for download by the end of March. If anyone is interested in some more information in advance of its release, please contact me via e-mail....

Sorry, my fault - I hadn't ticked the box in my user profile to allow forum members to send me e-mails!!
So now you can click on my username and send me any questions by e-mail.

If the moderators don't object, maybe some of the correspondence can be made public in this (or another) thread....
